Hi,
I'm a 230 lb great lakes sailor (who uphauls) looking for an affordable
used board (something in the $500-600 range complete). My last board
was an 89? Bic Bamba, but it was too heavy and too much to handle when
the wind picked up. I've seen lots of people recommend the Mistral
Equipe to people like me, but I am having trouble finding one. How does
the One Design compare? Any other recommendations? I also looked for a
Fanatic Cat, but didn't find any anywhere.

Thanks,
Tom

I'm 215 lbs. I sail my One Design a lot when the winds are below 20 mph.
Great board. With the proper rig, it'll not let you down. I've sailed
several Equipes as well on those lazy, low wind days here in the middle of
the summer.

However (there's always a HOWEVER), if all else is equal ($$$, condition,
etc) the Equipe would be my choice. The Equipe has a better volume
distribution in the tail area than the 1-Design. In on a plane, the Equipe
allows you to move further back sooner.

Both boards haul ass to weather. The dagger boards are wide, and a pain in
the rear. If you get one, drop me a line, and I'll describe a modification
to the dagger that will make its use more comfortable.

Don't have much experience with a Cat. I know the Cat owners love 'em, but
there aren't many in this area.

I'm sure there are plenty of opinions. Trust mine helps.

Sail Well.......

For $500-$600 "complete" (i.e. with full rig) you might be able to get
a One Design with stock rig. I sail one frequently for fun and in
competition. The Equipe is much better for a heavier sailor because it
is larger.

Beware: There have been three Equipe models. You want the last one. It
used to be called the Equipe II. Another excellent choice would be a
Superlight II that had exactly the same shape. For some reason Mistral
discontinued it!

The Fanatic Cat 380 (Used to be Mega Cat) is also an excellent
longboard. Watch your wallet, you may end up spending more than you
planned!

Hi Peter,
No I don't know the volume of the Bamba. It's a big board though,
essentially a course board, with upwind straps on the rail in front of
the reaching straps. Big carbon centerboard. Good board, but it's
heavy and if you get into a blow, it's a bear to handle. Of course I
was sailing with my 8.0 and/or 9.5! :)
I don't think Bic makes anything like it anymore, but if you see a Bic
that looks like an Equipe, then you're looking at a Bamba.

According to the 1992 BIC Sport brochure (that came with
my E-Rock).....

Bamba :
length : 3.70 meters (12'2")
width : .65 m (25")
weight : 15kg (33 lbs.)
volume : 240 liters
skegs : trimbox
deck pads : no
graphics : deck + hull
program : course racing

I assume that other years specs are similar.

Hope this helps -- Larry

Yes, the dagger in my Equipe is a big pain. What is the mod for the dagger?

I got my Equipe in Berkeley around '88. I've recently been sailing it a lot.
It is still
a great board.

Yo brudda,
I've sailed both One Design (which I own) and new Equipe's (Both my wife and I
have the older versions). The Equipe is far superior and will be worth
searching for till you find one. Try the New England Windsurfing Journal want
ads. They can be located online.
Happy sailing
