Several (as above) have e-mailed me... wrt *not* using greasy kid's stuff...

Performance Diver... 24 hr tel: 800/933-2299 fax: 800/727-3291
One Performance Way, PO Box 2741, Chapel Hill NC 27515-2741, USA
current 1995 summer catalog lists:
polartec (polyproplene) suits from $150 (advt as >2mm neoprene in warmth)
outer shell is nylon/lycra, inner is Polartec fleece (aka polyproplene)
mens: rear zipper; womens: front zipper; various colors, patterns, etc.
"challenger" lycra suits from $38 5.2oz 87%/13% nylon/lycra all front zip
or "classic" lycra suits from $45 5.2oz 82%/18% nylon/lycra all front zip
all above suits come with foot stirups; lycra suits also have thumb loops.
also listed eg: storm whistle, strobe lights & (obviously) diver's goodies.

disclaimer: i'm just one of their customers (no fiscal connection whatsoever)
there are other such catalog, as well as retail, sales sources; this just one.

also, for about the same price, one can also get DanceSkins (no zip, pull on)
dancer's 'leotard'). these (brand-name) ones while appreciably thinner, are
apparently higher lycra percentage, available retail, & can be had in flesh
color. nb: when wet, such suits get 'nude' (potentially a stylish product).
(best used w/pocket protector filled with a range of multi-colored pens!)

lastly, as may relate, spedo (brand) nylon/lycra caps, while doing nothing to
mask yer face from the sun, *will* protect a bald beenie & ears. or most any
camping store sells brimmed cap with neck flap (ala lawrence of arabia style)

My lycra gear was made by Northshore in Maui. I don't know if they're
still in business, but they made long and short-sleeved shirts and
mid-thick length shorts in colors from mild to wild. Now my wife makes
long-sleeved lycra shirts for me with fabric from the fabric store. I get
a lot of compliments on them and a lot of"where can I get one of those?".

If some people think they look geeky, I couldn't care less. Melanoma is
the deadliest, fastest-metastasizing cancer I know of, and I live in the
skin-cancer capital of the U.S. and sail almost daily all spring and
summer.

Another good inexpensive source of lycra suits is Performance Diver in Chapel Hill, N. C. They have
plain lycra and Polartec lined lycra at pretty good prices. (800) 933-2299. For those of you living/sailing
on the Chesapeake in the summer, the thin lycra suit is cheap sea nettle protection as well as sun
protection.
Also I don't know how many know that the best (As in instant) cure for sea nettle/Port. Man'O war/
jellyfish stings is to have a little fresh papaya on hand (Just a slice or two in your cooler), the paipain
kills the sting instanly, Try It, It really works.

For people who want protection for their head and face from UV-B
you can get the SUNLIDZ "Gladiator" from Australia. It's made from Lycra
and flexible plastic and gives over 98% cover. It's in the process of
being endorsed by the Skin and Cancer Foundation there.
If you need head protection from impact then stick to a helmet, but consider
the use of some cover for the back of your neck.
A
Details on the "Gladiator" from me via email or fax 61-02-6653160

Regards to all, and stay covered..life is long.

Timo.
