On my older Gulftech booms I've been using Streamline Strap-On heads
and those heads are starting to show problems so I'm considering which
replacement to go with for the upgrade. I like the looks of the
MauiSails replacement boom heads, but they are out of stock on the
MauiSails website. As an alternative, I'm considering the HPL Pro-
Level Plastic boom replacement heads. How do they perform? Do they
hold up to intense usage?

I got one, actually to replace my Gulftech boom head,
not so good, at least for me, boom slips down,
skinny shim is real good though, and on skinnies it doesn't slip. Next time,
I'll get MS boom head....

Thanks Sergio, You've convinced me to go with the MS boom head.
Sounds like the HPL Pro is almost but not quite up to speed. I
appreciate the help!

hey, i got a cracked gulftech boom head too (glory carbon wave).
what's involved in replacing the head? is gulftech a continuous
carbon head, or it the head screwed/glued on to the arms?
how do you remove the old gulftech head?
thanks.

Hi Alex, the boom I'm putting the MS head on is an old....old...old
Gulftech. It's so old, it was one of the "hand wrapped" models
probably from about 1992. It used to have the head with the internal
aluminum tube, but long ago, that head broke, so I used muratic acid
to eat out the aluminum tube, then I made a carbon fiber connecting
tube to connect the arms and then installed a Streamlined Strap-on
head. The Strap-on broke a couple days ago and the MS head was the
logical upgrade. I've had enough with the Streamlined heads especially
now that the MS head is an option. I'm not real familiar with the
Glory Carbon Wave so I don't know how to guide you. Does it have a
carbon connecting tube between the arms or is the the plastic molded
over an aluminum tube?

I am absolutely stoked on the new HPL boom heads. I replaced both of
my old HPL heads on my HPL carbon booms and the new ones are rock
solid and work brilliantly. I am a serious wave sailor and they have
taken numerous beatings. No complaints except that you have to be
careful not to lose the skinny shim as it can pop-off when you throw
your boom in the back of the truck unless you close the head.

hi bob,

not sure what's underneath the boom head, i haven't taken
it off to find out yet as i can still use it as a backup
boom (albeit upside down -- compression on the cracked plastic head,
which should be okay).

the streamline looked pretty beefy, but i guess nothing is bombproof.
i considered using that also, but it also looked like it could whack
parts of the board off (at least the way i sail :-)

Hi

I was the owner of GULFTECH when the booms were made in Texas. We hand
made Bob's boom there in Corpus Christi. The name of the GUlftech Wave
boom was "Crash & Burn"... anyother form of a Gulftech boom is not the
original and was made in Taiwain to standards other then what was made
in Texas.

Best of luck fitting the new boom hear onto your boom... and, have fun
when the wind bows!!

Best regards

I too was once worried about the aluminum Streamlined Strap On head
doing major damage to my board... but now boards are so short that the
boom head will never hit my board no matter what. I suppose for
shorter sailors who ride with low booms or people with older, longer
boards, this might be a problem, but I don't think it's an issue for
people with more modern gear.

The Streamlined is strong and if it breaks the company is great in helping
you out. I totally recommend Streamlined products from my experience. I also
don't think nose damage is likely and you could pad it like any boom head.

However... The straps on that thing drove me crazy. I really didn't like the
amount of fiddling I had to do and the straps had to be just right or the boom
would slip. So I think you should go for the Maui Sails boom head if you can.

Cheers,
Cliff

First day with the big Gulftech boom and the MauiSails Head and the
verdict is: GREAT! The head is rock solid and very easy to clamp. I
may have been just a bit loose on the amount of clamping but I didn't
detect any tendancy to slide down the mast. All in all, it is just
what I was needing for my big Gulftech boom.
