So let's get this straight....

You quit windsurfing, then afterwards decide to out of nowhere start
posting to rec.windsurfing starting a couple of threads about quitting.

Which raises the question: Why?

Nostalgia?

Sellers remorse?

Recruiting?

Trolling?

Or have I just missed the past contributions you made in rec.windsurfing
while you were still a windsurfer? With this new zeal for surfing, I
would've expected more posts in the surfing groups myself. Apologies if
I've missed something or am being too harsh.

Most definately. This is bullshit...as someone else said, you don't quit
something and then start making noise about it. Besides, how much time have
the sailors he listed got on the water? Their taking an interest in other
watersports is understandable.

Thanks, Ray.
It's nice to be welcomed back, in spite of all that localism and that
provokingly outdated one board quiver I carry ('02 model *narrow* wave board!).

Being wrapped up in my cocoon of withdrawal and denial during my years of
absence, I must have missed the careers of about half of the above "well-known"
sailors take off and fade.

So many important events went unnoticed - it's shocking, really: Naish took up
kiting. Brockhaus sold F2. HiTech makes symmetrical boards.

I am working on catching up though.

Hi, my name is florian and I am a windsurfer.

Scott was in the Summer Slalom Series for a few races this past
summer. I am sure he sailed other days too.

Exactly, and he has also started doing windsurf training for other
clients as well. A friend of mine trained with him last winter to get
ready for last years formula season. Still sailing like waterbug.

Maybe you should list ROBBIE NAISH. SIKE. He is still windsurfing
too. Was at lanes two weeks ago, and was at Jaws this past weekend
(strap surfing cause no wind). Try again, but, thanks for playing.
:)

All of these people who you claim dont windsurf anymore, are mostly
out of the public eye and sail cause enjoy it. They made their mark
and are now just chillin and sailing. No more rat race. Just cause
people retire from windsurfing as a job doesnt mean they retire from
the sport recreationally.

Yep windsurfing is pretty lame. I mean look at this picture of Polokow at
San Carlos. http://www.harborside.com/~jeffmcv/baja99%20(1).jpg. Why would
anybody want to do that? Or how about Jeff Burton at C street down by L.A.
on a Santa Anna wind before he turned kiter
http://www.harborside.com/~jeffmcv/Dubock%20Burton%202%20(2).jpg. It's no
wonder he just kites now that does not look fun at all. Oh yeah and here is
a super week take from Nate Mershon (sp?) near Pistol River.
http://www.harborside.com/~jeffmcv/NateAerial.jpg Why does he put up with
all that gear and all those hassles just to do something like that. Pitiful.
Pathetic really isn't it.

florian was one of the fathers of wave/freestyle who left the scene
abruptly. i thought he left to search for the perfect wave or to work
with jurgen on design ( http://www.northshore-fuerte.com/en/index.htm

I was going to kill this thread, but now I feel really proud to have been
the first of a lot of really great responses to "Zone".

And yes, I'm not a famous windsurfer, though through working in the industry
for many years I met lots of them.

I probably would have overlooked his original post if he hadn't mentioned
the "attitude" of windsurfers. Attitude? Sure, a few, even at local spots,
have attitude. Some of the pros have attitude. However, pretty much from
total beginners, to top pros, you will NEVER find a group of less
ego-centric people. Windsurfers, to quote Cyndi Lauper, "Just Want to Have
Fun."

If Zone can't afford the gear he aspires to own, I can understand that. If
he feels he's in a total arms race at his local sailing area, I can
understand that too. I got out of the "arms race" years ago. I simply sail
for fun, on gear that I like and can afford. I suspect the ego and
'attitude' has more to do with him than those he sails, or 'sailed' with.

I sail in an area where some spend multi-thousands of dollars on windsurfing
every year. I can't do that. I didn't let it ruin the sport for me! I
windsurf because I love it, not because I want to get into an equipment
battle with other people.

Hope Zone finds his comfort zone.

Famous - publicly, even? Don't try Google against my name; that would *really*
confuse the picture: There are only a some references to my music and a few
credits on obscure Jazz records.

Windsurfing specific? You know, I was bitten by that bug pretty hard. I started
shaping boards when I was 14 (having sailed for just two years) and started
making sails shortly thereafter. I spent entire years in school filling my books
with drawings of boards, sail outlines, new moves and the perfect wave. I was
never "discovered" or recognized by the industry or the "scene" or anyone really -
mostly because I did not seek validation but followed my passion.

.. and perhaps because I wasn't fast/ripping enough to stand out from the
hundreds of others like me.

Since then, I have found passion for a couple of other things and pursuits in
life, just like you seem to have now, and only after ten years have I come back
to windsurfing. Perhaps you will, too. Meanwhile, I really wish you all the best
and that you find fulfillment in whatever you chose to do.

However, I sincerely believe that if you knew this passion in the same way,
you'd understand why some of the sailors here would have preferred if you took
your hat and left quietly.

Close but no cigar,
"DubockBurton .jpg" still has a space in it. Hint: if there's a percent sign in
the URL, there is usually an encoded "special character" such as the space char (%
20). The percent sign itself is a special character (%25) - that's the problem.

Depending on the URL handling of your newsreader, it will try to reencode the
leading "%" to %25 therefore pointing the browser to ./DubockBurton%2520.jpg
instead of ./DubockBurton%20.jpg

That works. I usually stick the meat into a roasting pan and onto a bed of young
potatoes cut in half. The rosemary (and some sailkote - pardon, olive oil) goes
onto the potatoes (underneath the roast). Oven time is 15 minutes per pound of
meat incl. bone at 350 F in my oven - but that's my oven. Don't be afraid to
stick a knife into the meat to check the progress - lamb doesn't dry out that
easily.

You can add a spring of fresh rosemary just before serving - it will "open up"
through the heat of the roast and release its aroma without burning up.

Also, be sure to insert the garlic all the way into the pockets you cut into the
meat with a paring knife (no tensioning required). Otherwise it will burn and
taste bitter.

I usually serve braised string beans (cooked quickly in salted boiling water to
preserve green color and crisp). Toss with pan-seared tomatoes on special
occasions (25+kts).

You may want to rig your beans haricot vertes... three to four minutes in
boiling water, then quickly drain, transfer to ice water (wear booties and a
hood). Then back in the sauce pan go some olive oil, chopped fresh garlic,
salt, pepper, parsley and breadcrumbs. Toss the beans back in over medium heat
and sheet in for a minute.

Thanks for the lamb info!

If making the cover of a Windmag counts you in as well-known, then I
suppose you could include John Kerry on the list. Don't know if it hurt him
with any voters but I can foresee the TV adds next fall "you going to vote
for this guy.... why do you think they call them dopes on ropes?" Maybe
he's still sailing but all I've heard lately is he's flying kites.

I understand Mike. But I've made it clear that I was hooked on
windsurfing. Just got bored and tired of carrying/rigging gear! Why
does everyone get angry when I'm just expressing myself!?

1. You've stated in earlier threads that you don't care what people think.
Obviously that's nonsense.

2. You've also referred to this newsgroup a few times as a forum for
expressing yourself. While that's not completely inaccurate, this is
primarily a forum for windsurfing enthusiasts to communicate with each other.
You're no longer a windsurfing enthusiast. When you claim you were, you did
not participate in any meaningful way in this forum. Nor are you now...search
the archives of this newsgroup and you'll find very little in the way of
discussion by people about why they are quitting or have quit windsurfing.
You're in the wrong place. You've basically come to a party where everyone
likes something, and are spending time announcing how you no longer like what
we all like.

How fascinating.

i don't think anybody is angry at your decision not to windsurf
anymore, - i don't really care what you do. if you had been someone
who had been posting here for years, then i would care. i don't even
think you said you had been lurking for any period of time.

personally, i take you at your word, - you were a dedicated
windsurfer who got tired of the hassle. ok, that happens. i don't
take it as a slap at the sport generally, and as i said - i
don't really care.

the main issue is that, as on usenet generally, when someone
new turns up and stirs the pot with their first post, people
question their motive. this is entirely normal, and to the extent
that people are "angry", it is because of this not because you
have quit windsurfing.

you have explained yourself, and i believe you, but i think some
here question whether you ever got on a board.

you're position is similar to others here. you express that like
others, you "don't care" yet you follow that statement with a
sarcastic remark!

many people here are taking it all wrong. its as if i am personally
insulting them by quitting a sport that they love. if you all "don't
care" then why all the snide remarks?

it's not clear which remark you think is sarcastic - the
"i don't really care..", or something that follows it.

in any case, i didn't intend for it to be sarcastic. i only
meant that it isn't important to me whether you windsurf,
or not. i'm sure you would say the same about me. on reading
my post, i can see how you may have thought it was meant
snidely, but it wasn't.

i think i said clearly that people here are _not_ insulted

I'm losing no credibility. I have been windsurfing and participating in this
forum regularly for years. Some people may disagree with me, but my
authenticity is pretty much established.

I am not the rec.windsurfing monitor. I am a windsurfing enthusiast
participating in a forum about windsurfing. I'm "expressing myself" no less
than you are. My comments on your participation and postings here are
presented no differently than I'd address a discussion about a bad fin or
footstrap or a post giving what is in my opinion bad information. You've
made some ridiculous comments about windsurfing, and I'm ridiculing them.

You decided to publically declare yourself out of windsurfing to a group of
windsurfers you've never met. You quite naturally received responses from
enthusiasts who disagreed with much of what you said were your reasons.
Fine...to each his own (with the exception of the comment that you were going
from windsurfing to surfing to avoid posers...which is preposterous.)
Meanwhile why are you still posting here? By definition you're not going to
get the last word...it's a windsurfing forum, and the windsurfers are still
going to be here after you presumably leave. And you are going to leave,
aren't you, or was it your intention to join a forum about something you aren't
a part of. That, I would say, is posing.

I am not involved in the race series anymore since moving to Maui, but
am still involved in KOTC. Mike Casso took over the series a few
years ago. Not sure if he is still doing it. I would contact Platt

I cook the odd whole lamb on occasion, and find the best flavour has
come from stabbing the meat and stuffing garlic cloves and rosemary
sprigs into the holes.
Then I sprinkle loads of lemon juice, sea salt and black pepper onto
the outside.
Thats some mighty fine eatins.

Ummm... 2 sails and 2 boards doesnt constitute competing in am arms
race. Now if you had a van full of like 4 boards and 12 sails, then I
would agree. But, come one, you had 4 pieces of equipment. I know
surfers who have three boards alone for different conditions.
