This particular model is supposed to support only D8 playback. Does
that mean it can not support analogue 8mm videos or it simply can not
use the 8 mm tapes. i.e., it would record only with D8 tapes.
Any models higher than 140 seem to support D8, Hi8 and 8 mm.

I have another question about the Hi8 and D8 tapes? I thought they
were same but the specs for TRV240 says it supports D8, Hi8 and 8mm.
Now, that should supposedly mean D8 and Hi8 are different. Is it so?

Thanks,
akshat

AFAIK the 140-model doesn't have the option to read the analog HI8/Video8
tapes - in opposite to the higher numbered models.
That however doesn't mean that you couldn't use HI8/Video8 tapes for your
digital recordings.

Nope, in fact the D8-tapes are the same as MP HI8-Tapes (at least that's
what it was about 1/2 year ago, before I switched to MiniDV :)) ). I always
used HI8 tapes because they were much cheaper than the D8 variant.

Hi Akshat,
I am under the impression that all D8 cameras can play back analog 8 mm.

There is no difference between Hi8 and D8 tape that I know of other than the
indicated recording time. The Hi8 tape shows it to be longer than it
really is.

Regards,

Martin

The Sony TRV130 and TRV140 Digital8 models cannot play back
analog-recorded tapes and they do not have any type of audio-video
inputs. Their FireWire or i-Link ports are for output only.

Are we talking about the 140E (UK) models? It would be pretty stupid of
Sony to generally ship any units where their Firewire ports are output
only.

I am virtually certain that it is only the TRV130E and TRV140E models
that cannot import DV on the I-Link port. None of the 130 or 140
models can import analog video because the input jacks only function
for analog output. None of the 130 or 140 models can play analog
recorded tapes. Tapes labeled D8 are actually Hi8 tapes but they may
be thinner so that they contain more feet of tape. Normal P6-120
tapes will play and record for 60 minutes at the SP speed in a NTSC D8
camcorder. I believe there is a D8 labeled tape that will record and
play for 90 minutes at the SP speed in that same NTSC D8 camcorder.

The TRV130E and TRV140E models are not the only models that have the
DV-IN turned OFF at the factory. It may be that all E models have
the DV-IN turned off at the factory. Some can be turned back ON by
aftermarket Widgets but I have heard that the current x4x series is
permanently turned OFF and cannot be turned back ON.

None of the dealers' websites or that of Sony discuss whether the
NTSC TRV130 and TRV140 can import digital video on the i-Link
connection. Someone who owns one could set this straight??

I found a puzzling reference on the B&H Photo website about the
TRV140 and all current Sony models of Digital8 camcorders.
It stated that they all had audio dubbing using the 12-bit channels.
Sony's website doesn't mention this and I haven't heard of any consumer
digital camcorders that have this capability. B&H is usually reliable
on their product information. Does anyone know anything about this
audio dubbing feature on these models?

This is off the top of my head so it could be completely wrong, but I
don't believe audio dubbing is possible on any Digital8 models. I seem to
recall that being the case for my TRV-320 anyway. I know the DV format
allows it but the Digital8's don't, for whatever reason. I thought that
was one of the "perks" when I upgraded to a miniDV TRV-25.

I agree with Jay. I have a TRV310, 320, 720, 830 and GV-D800 and
none of them can do audio dubbing. So there is absolutely no reason
to ever use 12 bit audio mode. Yet Sony makes 12 bit audio the
default audio setting? Even the people that make them don't have a
clue what they are doing.

Even B&H has problems in their marketing department. In the ads they
have been running the past 3 months or so, they picture a Sony Video
Walkman with a LCD screen and a GV-D300 model number. That is a lie.
The GV-D300 does not have a LCD screen. I wonder how many people
ordered that model thinking they were going to get the model pictured?
