Does anyone know how to turn on service mode for the 32XBR? Will
the procedure for the TS models works as well? Thanks.

An excellent posting - any chance you can pass on similar info for the
KV-20EXR20 series? (1992ish) The "family" includes the KV-20EXR20, the
KV-27EXR20, and the KV-27EXR25. I have the KV-20.

Thanks...

Thanks! Sorry, but the only info I have is on those models (because I have
a 27TS32 - the cheapest Sony 27" with S-Video at the time).

It took a lot of work to get that info; the shop manual was too expensive to
justify, and I had to talk the dealer repair center into faxing that to me.

The set was so grossly misaligned from the factory that I was even
missing 1/2" of some regular TV titles! He said that was 'normal' (I know
a certain amount is but this set even made watching TV annoying, let alone
laser) and they would not re-align it under warranty.

Maybe someone should start an archive of this "Sony service mode" stuff for
various models? Could be a big headache saver for many.

Yeah, thanks for the great service-mode info for recent Sony TV's... BTW, I'm
glad to report that it also works for the KV-27V10 (and probably its big brother
the KV-27V15)! I adjusted some annoying Vertical Sync. problem I experienced only
when searching tapes backwards in SP mode with my S-VHS VCR.

I am very curious if any other sony models do this, if you think about it
all sony's have microprosecors. If anyone else has info on other older
models of sony tv's that operate with these codes please post it.

Thanks

These codes will work with any Sony TV that is equipped for closed captioning,
and with these other models I know of:

- All 27", 19" or 32" XBR models, and all XBR projection sets *except* the
KPR-36XBR;

- All direct-view EXR models, and all HFR models.

(I'm referring to North America only here, though these codes should work in
any NTSC country except Japan. I don't have any information on Japanese models
or on ones intended for countries with other TV standards.)

If that doesn't work, look on the input panel for a small, unmarked round hole.
If you find one, press the button in the hole while turning on the set *with
the remote control*.

>1. AFC AFC Loop gain 0-3 *0 *0
>2. HFRE H.Frequency 0-127 70 70

The best way to adjust HFRE is to tune in a good local station (or a major
cable channel, but not on DSS or Primestar), set AFC to 3 and then set HFRE to
make the picture float by as slowly as possible. After you're done, set AFC
back
to 0. (If you get a "flagging" effect at the top of the picture when playing
video tapes, setting AFC to 1 or 2 may reduce or eliminate that problem.)

>8. HPOS H.Center 0-15 6 5

Don't adjust HPOS until you've adjusted HFRE as I mentioned above.

>25. VSMO V Pull in Range 0,1 *0 *0

Actually this is a mode switch. If you set this to 1 the VFRE control will have
no effect, and the picture may be slightly less stable under poor conditions.
(If you need to view PAL or SECAM signals, setting this to 1 will enable that
capability -- in B&W only.)

>31. NOTC Notch On/Off 0,1 *1 *1

This mode setting is overridden by the ID1 parameter.

>32. DRGB OSD Intensity 0,1 *0 *0

Changing DRGB to 1 will cut the brightness of the on-screen display to a more
comfortable point; older Sony service manuals specified that this should be
set to 1, but the factory always sets this to 0.

These are convergence controls; they should be functional on any 32" model, but
not on 27" or smaller sets.

>51. ID-1 127

This controls video features; if you set this to a value 64 lower than that as
shipped, the notch filter will be enabled to get rid of "hanging dot"
interference
in the picture.

>52. ID-2 0

This sets up user interface features; I believe setting this to a value of 64
(or 64 higher than an existing value below 64) enables Spanish-language menus.
Apparently the bilingual menus are deleted on Canadian versions to avoid
offending French speakers, since these sets don't have a French capability.

There's no "danger" here. All this does is restore all *user* settings to their
factory defaults, and it's usefulif a minor power surge has garbled memory in
the set.
