I have the VSX-501, which is similar to the 512S. I am quite satisfied;
it has plenty of inputs and outputs (4 video, 3 audio + phono.)

As for how it works with other components: it works fine with my Pioneer LD
player. In fact, the receiver remote lets you control the player. I'm also
using PDB Alpha speakers and a JVC VCR, and haven't had any problems.

I recently purchased the Pioneer VSX-512S A/V Receiver. I'm curious if any
one has had experience with Pioneer. Is this a good receiver? does it work
well with Pioneer speakers or other brands and with other components?

If anyone owns Pioneer components, I would appreciate and advice! What
Pioneer LD would go well with this receiver? Thanks in advance.

I have been using a 512S since this past spring. It has more inputs, outputs,
programmable features, etc., than I can use. And everything works pretty well.
Still, I am a bit dissatisfied with it, because (a) it drives the A and B speakers
in series, rather than in parallel, which causes a big change in the frequency
response when both sets of speakers are on at the same time (which I often like
to have), and (b) there is a fairly high noise level in the audio channels,
due to both the amplifier sections and the surround processor. I must admit
that I don't notice these problems in normal, casual listening, but they do
become apparent when I test and listen for them.

The 512S has a very nice learning remote. It can't duplicate *all* the features
of the LD player's remote, so I still use the latter when I want to program the
tracks of a CD or seek to a particular point on an LD.

In general, I think it's a good entry-level A/V receiver. I think it has been
superseded by newer models that might offer more at a lower price, so I hope Mark
got it at a good discount.

Hey Cool!

I have a Pioneer VSX-511S which is similar to the 501 and 512S.
I'm also using PSB Alphas for my rear speakers AND have a JVC VR-606U
video recorder!

I have Paradigm 9se MKIIIs for the main speakers and a Paradigm CC-100
centre channel. While I love the 511S for it's features/ease of
use/excellent remote etc., I feel it is somewhat underpowered for my
Paradigms. The audio quality is still quite good but I think my
speakers would be much happier with some more "cleaner" watts.

I think the Pioneer VSX-511S would make an excellent receiver if you use
bookshelf speakers for front and rear along with a powered subwoofer.
This receiver is very well designed in terms of being quite straight
forward to operate and again I must say that the remote is one of the
best I've ever seen under any brand name.

That's my two cents....
