it says it can record in sp, lp, and ep.
there is a switch at back with modes of (pal), (ntsc pb & ntsc 4.43), and
(ntsc 3.58)
what do they all mean.
Also how is protection implemented in tapes, and how do you by-pass it.

Thanks

Do you mean NTSC EP? There is no PAL EP. The PAL LP is about same as
NTSC EP when it comes to tape speed.
The tape speeds are:
PAL: SP: 23.39 mm/s LP: 11.7 mm/s
NTSC: SP: 33.35 mm/s LP: 16.68 mm/s EP: 11.12 mm/s
Also the LP in PAL is less standard than the LP/EP in NTSC as it is not
supported on the cheapest VCRs.

They are different TV/video formats. NTSC is used in US and Japan and
at least in some parts of Latin America. PAL is used in most of Europe.
There is a third system SECAM which is used in France and former East
Europe. SECAM differs from PAL only on the way color is transmitted.
