I live in Canada and am looking at buying a Sony digital camcorder.
The prices at retailers in Canada are much higher than those at most
of the online US stores but I have concerns about warranties. How does
it work in these cases? Can I get warranty work done in Canada, do I
have to ship the camcorder to the US for warranty work, or is there no
warranty coverage?

Thanks for any help from any other Canadians out there.

Sony Canada will only honour warranty on Sony products purchased in Canada.
They will not even honour an International Warranty. This is the same with
most manufacturers now, the only exception appears to be Canon.
Actually your comment about that "The prices at retailers in Canada are much
higher than those at most of the online US stores" might not be correct .
You have to be very careful that the products advertised in the U.S. are not
grey market, and any how when you facture in exchange rate, shipping costs
and GST, I think you will find that there is not a cost advantage to
purchasing in the U.S.

Well here is what I am currently looking at. The Sony DCR-PC110 DV
Camcorder. The Canadian MSRP of this is $3300+taxes. I have been to 3
different stores in Ottawa which have the camcorder at this price. I
have got 4 quotes from US online stores for this camera including
3-day courier delivery to Canada, exchange, duties, etc. that are in
the $2500-2600+taxes range (This is including some ridiculous $80
shipping charge). This is a huge difference: $700-800 + 15% tax =
$800-900 difference. The US stores are Bestbuydigital, Etronics,
Profeel, and Abe's of Maine. Is there really a chance that these
companies are all selling grey market products? I don't like the
sounds of the Warranty problems but could I ship it to the US to be
repaired if needed? I only live 1 hour from the US border anyway. I
asked some stores if they would match the price or come close. The
best they could do is 10% off. Does anyone know of any Canadian stores
that will match internet prices?

Thanks,

-Darryl

I've bought from Profeel -- the products are not 'grey market'
but you won't get warranty coverage in Canada ... you'd have to
ship back to the US if you needed work.

However, the last 'big' purchase I made, I laid out the numbers
to a local (Ottawa) retailer, and they matched price.

Of the retailers you mentioned, I think you'll find a consensus here that
only Profeel is a reputable one. Profeel is excellent. Their goods are
not grey market. Who knows about the others.

Thanks for the information. I don't think I would mind shipping to the
US for service if needed since it will be a lot cheaper than the
up-front price difference. If you are willing to tell me which or if
any Ottawa retailers which match prices or come close to matching
please email me. They all told me I needed an actual sale flyer
stating the prices and wouldn't take any kind of invoice or wouldn't
call anyone to check.

I have also checkout out B&W Photo which seems to have a decent
reputation.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Bleekers. But I have a purchase relationship with them that
goes back over twenty years ... YMMV

I've been curious about the warranty issue myself. I called Kodak
about this and they say the warranty is still good in Canada even
though the product was ordered from the USA. I don't know about Sony
but you can call them (mention Kodak). I know that Sears in the USA
matches internet pricing. Call a local Canadian Sears and see (or
better yet, call the HO).

Try Costco. I saw a VX2000 there for about $4,500 Cdn. I saw
either a PC100 or PC110 there too. Forgot the price.
