Thanks in advance,
Russ
I was considering this one too, but I'm now leaning towards the tr3000 + external
casio lcd monitor (when needed). I tried the trv70 out at a local Circuit City
and found it to be heavier & much more awkward to use than the tr3000. Plus
the trv70 at my local store was broke, and I had to drive across town to try
it at another store. I've heard that the lcd screens are problematic, and
it may be better off to get the monitor separate so that if something goes wrong
with it, you just replace the monitor, rather than tying up the camcorder
in repair. The tr3000 has a bigger lens & optical stabilization (I believe the
tr70 has digital stabilization) and time code. However, the tr3000 + monitor
will cost a bit more ( ~$200) than the tr70.

Right on both counts. I'd take the TR-3000 over the TRV-70 for the
optical stabilization alone--digital stabilization isn't anywhere near
as good as optical. The Canon ES2000 and ES5000 are also fine cameras
with optical stabilization. (I've got an ES5000 and have been
delighted with it.)

Unfortunately, the ES5000 does not have time code. I really wish it
did. The TR-3000 does have RC time code.

Is Hi-8 necessary in order to implement time codes?

According to the Sony web page, the TRV81 has RCTC. But the TRV41 feature
listing does not include RCTC. I really believe that Sony would have listed
this capability for the TRV41 if it was included on the product. So I think
that Brian is probably only partly right.
But, since I have not actually examined a TRV41, I could be wrong myself.
Anybody who actually owns a TRV41 willing to comment???

Thanks for the reply. To answer your question... RCTC is written and read
from the 8mm tape by a separate head. It wouldn't matter whether the VCR or
camcorder is Hi8 or just regular 8mm. The same head and electronics circuitry
would be required for handling timecode in either case.
However, as a practical matter, electronics manufacturers seem to view RCTC
as one of the ultimate "high end" features, included only on their most
expensive consumer products. That's why they only put it on Hi8 equipment,
and only on the priciest stuff even then. I, personally, wish that every
piece of 8mm/Hi8 consumer electronics gear came with full LANC and RCTC
capabilities included. But I think I'm part of a minority... most people
would rather see low prices than high-tech feature sets.

I don't have one, I was quoting from a new magazine called Audio Video
Shopper. I reread it just now, and they state that the 41 has RC. (They
probably made a mistake if both the 41 and 81 share the same user guide.)
