Hello, the title pretty much says it all. I need your much valued
opinions on these two VCRs, the JVC HR-VP700 vs the Sony SLV-900. I am
considering getting a HI-FI VCR for my system. I have been reading this
newsgroup for the past 2 weeks or so and all I have heard are horror stories
about Sony and JVC. Any positive news?
Anyways, from what I heard, JVC's are excellent VCR's. This
particular one I think is cool due to its features eg. flying erase head and
jog shuttle. The cheapest I have seen is about $379 through mail order.
(cool remote too)
However, since my Reciever/AMP is a low end Sony STR-790, the Sony
900 at first would seem to be the the complementary VCR to get(to have one
central remote). But I dislike the fact that Sony puts such a huge emphasis
on the remote control. I understand that Sony VCR's are almost annoying and
useless without the remote. And since I am gonna have to use the Sony VCR
remote, getting another Sony(for unified remote) sounds like a self-defeating
idea. The prices I seem range from 419 to 389(name of mailorder company
FACTORY DIRECT?).
The basic reason that I am leaning toward the JVC is because the JVC
seems to be overall lower in price for the same amount of features. Also,
I plan on getting a second VCR next year or so. This second VCR will be
primarily be used to play tapes will the first one(the one I am buying
right now) records. So the second one doesnt need the fancy erase head
gizmoes. The JVC 600 seems to be my best choice for the second VCR if I
buy indeed the JVC 700 and I can use the same remote for both of them.
Please post your opinions, advice, horror stories, flames, etc. here
or email them to me at tzon...@soda.berkeley.edu . How reliable are these
two?
Pleae note that I am not limiting myself to these two VCRs in
particular. Any advice is welcome.
Thank you all for the advice and your time in advance.

Having been in the same situation I recently ordered the Sony 900HF.
Granted, the panel controls are kind of idiosyncratic, but I believe that
they are so in a good way. The vcr itself has an incredibly clean and sleek
appearance, if you care about these things. The sound and picture are
absolutely first rate (for VHS, that is).

I highly recommend that you order from Computability (they are authorized
JVC dealers as well and stock the HR-VP700U). The price for the 900HF was
US$389, shipping is free, and there is no credit card premium. Not only was
this the cheapest price that I could find, the woman to whom I spoke was
the most honest dealer I've ever encountered. She gave me all the
authorization, warranty info and options that I normally have to wrench
from sleazy mail order salespeople upfront before I could even ask.

They're listed in the mailorder FAQ which you can get at ssesco.com if you
son't already have it.

I must disagree... JVC can outperform SONY anyday as far as sound and picture
is concerned... (VHS/SVHS)
