The initial bit :
-----------------
If I have not written something about a particular title, it may be because
I don't know what it is about, or there may be nothing to say about it at this
time.
If you have any info which I can add in next week's chart about a particular
title, please email me.

I have included some info on PAL LD releases. If anyone knows any more,
with release dates if poss. please let me know.

Certificates and retail prices (where known for retail films in UKP)
are given.
UK Video certificates are :

U : Universal
Uc : Universal..but more suitable for children
PG : Parental Guidance
12 : Finally putting an end to films uprated to 15 for no reason
15 : Suitable for persons of only 14 or over (pardon?...) er make that 15
18 : Haven't got a clue on this one :)
18R: Restricted-18 films, which don't usually find their way to Woolies!
E : Exempt - usually applies to some music videos, and fitness videos.
Sadly does not apply to an uncut version of True Romance :(

Key :
STV - Straight-to-video

Bargains of the week!
---------------------
In certain high-street stores, I've seen "The Return of Jafar" selling for
11.99 (RRP 14.99), along with the widescreen boxsets of "The Piano" and
"Much Ado About Nothing" for 14.99 each (RRP 29.99)

The RENTAL chart !!
-------------------
10 (10) NON-MOVER : Schindler's List (15, P&S and Widescreen)

Spielberg's 195mins epic also exists in a 270min version (a 'directors cut'
if you will) but there don't seem to be any plans to release it at the
moment. Anyone with any news - please mail me.
Anyone seen the Widescreen video available? It's not in my shop.

9 (9) NON-MOVER : Maverick (PG, Warner)

Mel Gibson does Lethal Weapon 4, or may as well do, since the film
has the same main star as the Lethal Weapon films, the same director, Richard
Donner, and also a cameo from LW's Danny Glover. However, where Lethal Weapon 3
failed as being too comedic and less violent as compared to Lethal's 1 and 2,
this is like a PG-version of that film.
Everything coasts along in ok-but-nothing-special fashion for almost 2 hours,
and then the film's story ends, but they seemed fit to continue the film for
another 15-20 mins when it wasn't needed.

8 (8) NON-MOVER : Lightning Jack (PG)

7 (4) FALLER : Four Weddings and a Funeral (15, Columbia TriStar)
(WS PAL LD, 24.99)

Good points about the film :
1. Hugh Grant is a good actor and carries his part well.
2. The only decent f-word joke in the film was Hugh Grant's "F**k-a-doodle-doo!"
3. The End.

Bad points about the film :
1. I saw so many bits of the film on TV before I saw it at the cinema,
so when that time came I'd already seen any slightly-funny moments, and they
weren't funny second time around.
2. The video for Wet Wet Wet's "Love Is All Around" showed too many clips of
the film as well.
3. Rowan Atkinson's vicar-doing-first-time-marriage-service wasn't funny
in the first place from selected clips on TV, and was even worse in full.
4. The constant effing and jeffing when Hugh Grant and Charlotte Coleman were
late for weddings just wasn't funny, and constant use became tiresome.

Rating : 4/10 : Wait for its TV premiere on Channel 4...and then go out!

6 (6) NON-MOVER : Getting Even With Dad (PG, Warner)

5 (2) FALLER : Robocop 3 (15)

4 (3) FALLER : Beverly Hills Cop III (15, CIC)

I haven't seen this one, because I didn't see a single review or trailer
which shouted to me "*MUST-SEE*", and when it came out at the cinema the
review in Empire magazine concluded, "Worthless dud".
I would rather go back and watch the TV versions of the first two films rather
than this one, although the second one did have its moments on ITV, such as
when Judge Rheinhold is heading down a hill in a truck towards a closed gate,
shouts everyone's favourite F-word, but is blanked out, and another actor
calmly says a surprised "Damn".

3 (5) CLIMBER : Ace Ventura - Pet Detective (12, Warner)
(also available to buy for 14.99)

I haven't seen this yet, but after seeing clips of it, and of "The Mask", and
the forthcoming "Dumb and Dumber", I'm not in a hurry.
However, just when I thought Warner were ripping off the public in a way by
charging UKP 13.99 for new release retail videos, things took a step further
when this one was released with an RRP of UKP 14.99! This video is only
82 minutes long! Where will it all end?

2 (1) FALLER : Wolf (15, Columbia TriStar) (WS PAL LD, 24.99)

Jack Nicholson woos Michelle Pfeiffer and wees all over James Spader.
"I was just marking my territory", he declares.

1 NEW ENTRY : True Lies (15, CIC)

Some didn't like "Last Action Hero", but I did, but then this one is even
better, and without giving anything away, one scene at the end with Art Malik
took my breath away, although how it'll fare on the small screen is another
matter. Excellent James-Bond-style fun for all the family (well, maybe not
under-15's :), and unmissable.

RENTAL RELEASES for April :
---------------------------
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (15, 20:20 Vision) 12th
Highlander 3 - The Sorceror (15, Entertainment) 20th

New release news :

- True Lies was meant to have been pushed back for rental release to March,
thanks to the BBFC apparently not allowing the film a 15-cert on video (as it
was in the cinema) unless the scene with Jamie Lee Curtis doing a striptease
(in the middle of the film) is cut out completely. If they cut the scene out,
it would ruin the flow of the film. However, it has now been released as
a 15-cert, but with 8 seconds of cuts for Arnie headbutting some bad muslims.

- Menace II Society has now been given a release which AFAIK hasn't been cut.
It is the latest film to be cleared out of the BBFC's backlog of held-up titles,
following True Romance, and Bad Lieutenant.

- Schindler's List is available in both P&S and widescreen format, but how will
anyone convince their local video shop to stock it ? If anyone who is reading
this stocks the WS version, let me know and I'll give you a deserved mention!

The RETAIL Chart :
------------------
In this week's chart there are 11 new entries, 24 going down,
2 staying still, leaving 3 going up.

40 (34) FALLER : Jurassic Park (PG, CIC Video)
Video : 14.99 P&S/19.99 Rock Pack P&S/39.99 DNA Pack P&S
PAL LD : CLV WS : 29.99, CAV WS : 49.99, CIC/Pioneer

The one about the dinosaurs...

39 (40) CLIMBER : Wayne's World 2 (PG, 13.99 P&S, CIC)

Not as good as the first one, but still worth a watch esp. for Kim Basinger
as Honey Horne :)
Claim to fame : When I went to see this one in the cinema back in April last
year, ahead in the queue was none other than the guy who played religious cult
leader Simon Howe from Brookside. (and no, I didn't go and hassle him, but I
was tempted :)

38 (31) FALLER : Elle MacPherson - The Body (12.99)
37 NEW ENTRY : Frankenstein (15)

Not the recent Ken Branagh version, but the one from a year or so ago starring
Robert Powell, Carrie Fisher and Sir John Gielgud.

36 NEW ENTRY : Ai No Borei (Empire of Passion) (18, 15.99, Connossieur)

I haven't seen this one, but I have seen the prequel, "In The Realm of the
Senses (Ai No Corrida)" which has such strong sex scenes, that it hasn't made
the step from cinema cert. to video cert., although that one only attained
the cinema cert of 18 in 1991, and was made in 1975.
Ai No Borei was made in 1977. Anyone know of a possible release for the prequel?

35 NEW ENTRY : Mighty Morph'n Power Ranges Vols.8 & 9
34 (33) FALLER : Judgement At Nuremberg (9.99, Elite Collection)
33 NEW ENTRY : Story of a Cloistered Nun (Redemption)
32 (30) FALLER : Marty (12.99, Elite Collection)
31 (23) FALLER : The Age Of Innocence (U, 12.99 P&S and WS, Columbia TriStar)
30 (26) FALLER : Space 1999 Vol.20 (PG, ITC Video)

Featuring the last two adventures, "The Immunity Syndrome" and "The Dorcons".

29 NEW ENTRY : Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (PG, 12.99)

San Diego becomes terrorised by a load of blood-crazed killer tomatoes!
The military rushes into action! Features the mega-hit "Puberty Love".

28 (35) CLIMBER : Steve Coogan - Live N Lewd (18, 12.99)
27 NEW ENTRY : Dracula - Prince of Darkness (15, 12.99 WS, Lumiere)

Continuing the releases of cult films, this one stars Christopher Lee in
widescreen form in this 1965 sequel to the 1958 original, also directed by
Terence Fisher. Barbara Shelley is turned into an erotically charged vampire by
Lee, and Andrew Keir as a monk, sets out to become a vampire killer, shotgun in
hand. During the strenuous filming, Shelley actually swallowed her fangs, and
couldn't move onto the next scene until she'd taken salt water to make her
bring them back up!

26 (18) FALLER : Benny & Joon (15, 12.99, Warner)
25 (25) NON-MOVER : Smashing Pumpkins - Vieuphoria (15, 12.99)
24 (19) FALLER : The Remains of the Day (U, 12.99 P&S and WS, Columbia TriStar)
23 NEW ENTRY : Nike - Total Body Conditioning

Just out in time for those with New Year's resolutions to lose weight, but
haven't got round to keeping those resolutions!

22 (11) FALLER : The Guyver - Data 11 : The Beastmaster (15, 5.99, Manga)
21 (21) NON-MOVER : The Empire Strikes Back (U, P&S 10.99, WS 12.99, Fox Video)
20 (14) FALLER : Shadowlands (U, 13.99, CIC)

Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger star in this true-life story of a love affair
between author CS Lewis and Joy Gresham, set in England, 1952.
Winner of the Sir Alexander Korda Bafta Award for outstanding British Film of
The Year.

19 (12) FALLER : Untamed Heart (15, 10.99, Warner)

Christian Slater vs. Marisa Tomei in a battle of love (ahhh), as he tries to
win her heart since his own came in a transplant operation from a babboon.
I haven't seen this yet, but want to. However, what I do find interesting, and
this has happened on a number of occasions, with one more to come soon,
the retail video has been released sometime after the premiere on Sky TV -
2 months in this case.
Why has it taken so long to come around?

18 (17) FALLER : What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (12, 12.99, Entertainment)

One of two new Johnny Depp videos in this week's chart. Haven't seen it though.
This one made No.2 in the Top 10 rental chart back in September.

17 (16) FALLER : Return Of The Jedi (U, P&S 10.99, WS 12.99, Fox Video)
16 (7) FALLER : Star Trek Deep Space 9 - Vol. 3.1 (10.99, CIC)
15 (13) FALLER : Star Wars (U, P&S 10.99, WS 12.99, Fox Video)

One of the most famous film trilogies of all time gets a re-release in both
pan-and-scam and widescreen versions, this time from digital PAL masters,
so no trouble from the NTSC transfers which are usually forced upon us when
films are made as widescreen versions.
When this trilogy was first released in widescreen in August 1991, the front
sound channels were reversed either in part or throughout the whole film, so
when a tie-fighter heads left off the screen, it sounds right, wrong..right?

As far as I know, there are no theatrical trailers or extras with this, but
life isn't perfect, and if it was I'd have an LD player and the
THX CAV NTSC LD boxset, and I don't think I've ever fitted so many
abbreviations into one sentence. :)
All P&S and WS videos each have different packaging, and are reduced in price
since on the original release they cost 14.99 apiece!

Also, the new P&S version of "..Jedi" also has the front sound channels the
wrong way round. Just who did the transfers ?

14 NEW ENTRY : Dirty Ho (18, 12.99 WS, Made In Hong Kong)
13 (15) CLIMBER : Madonna - Laid Bare (E, 10.99)

Just a mere 46 mins of the lady who's getting past her prime.
See what it's really like to be "In Bed With Madonna".
A spokesman said yesterday : "She snores".

12 (10) FALLER : Stalingrad (15, 12.99 P&S, 14.99 WS, Entertainment)
11 (9) FALLER : Star Trek Next Generation - TV Movie Vol. 3 : Redemption (10.99)
10 (8) FALLER : Midnight Cowboy (18, 12.99, Elite Collection)

Features original trailer and documentary. But why isn't it widescreen?

9 (4) FALLER : Paul Weller - Highlights & Hang-Ups
8 (5) FALLER : Eddie Izzard - Unrepeatable (15, 12.99)
7 (6) FALLER : The Return of Jafar (U, 14.99, Buena Vista)

I haven't seen this one, but a lot has been made on TV adverts about
it being "Exclusive to video", and the video box itself proclaims,
"Video Premiere". From replies I had after last week, it seems that this isn't
as well put together as "Aladdin" by Disney's standards with the songs being
thrown in without much thought, while being better than a lot of regular
cartoons put out.
One reason I might see this one, is that the genie is voiced by Dan Castanella
(sp?) who does Homer Simpson!

6 (2) FALLER : Blur - Showtime

This is a live video featuring such hits as "Parklife" and "Girls And Boys".

5 NEW ENTRY : Star Trek Next Generation - TV Movie Vol.4 : Unification (10.99)
4 (3) FALLER : Manchester United - Video Magazine Vol.2 Part 4
3 (1) FALLER : Ace Ventura - Pet Detective (12, 14.99, Warner Home Video)

I haven't seen this yet, but after seeing clips of it, and of "The Mask", and
the forthcoming "Dumb and Dumber", I'm not in a hurry.
However, just when I thought Warner were ripping off the public in a way by
charging UKP 13.99 for new release retail videos, things took a step further
when this one was released with an RRP of UKP 14.99! This video is only
82 minutes long! Where will it all end?

2 NEW ENTRY : Star Trek Deep Space 9 - Vol. 3.2 (10.99, CIC)
1 NEW ENTRY : Carlito's Way (18, 13.99 P&S, 34.99 WS PAL LD, CIC/Pioneer)

This film sees the reunion of "Scarface"'s star, Al Pacino, and director,
Brian De Palma, in another Hispanic-themed ganster epic. Pacino does very well
as a just-released gang-lord trying to go straight and run a New York club,
Sean Penn, as his lawyer, give a suprisingly good performance, and then
Penelope Ann Miller just fills in time as the love-interest.
I felt though that the film, which runs for around 140 mins, could have been
trimmed by 30, and have been made much better.

Due to the fact that Brian De Palma is a director who uses his frame to full
effect, any attempt to P&S it for the video can be a disaster, so some scenes
were squeezed in order to make sense! The laserdisc though has the complete
2.35:1 widescreen picture. However, it is CLV all the way through, and as the
film lasts for 135 mins, at least one side could have been made in CAV for
close frame-by-frame examination.

When I wrote to CIC Video a couple of months ago, they told me that this was
one of four films scheduled for a widescreen video release sometime around
the end of 1994/start of 1995. I haven't heard of anything else yet though.
The other three films scheduled are : Top Gun, Dragon : The Bruce Lee Story,
and Cape Fear.
