: Does anyone have information on:
: 1 - Is the origional (uncut) version of "A Clockwork Orange" available
: anywhere? All video I have seen is the R rated version
: 2 - Perhaps a LD release date for the uncut version ?
The difference between the original theatrical cut and the letterboxed
(barely) release is just a couple of seconds cut from the rape scene.
This is what I remember from the discussion that occurred when A
Clockwork Orange was rereleased a couple of years ago.
1. The original footage of the x rated version is lost.
2. You can get by with a bit more these days and get an R rating.
3. Kubrick supervised this latest transfer, and this is what he says
is a 'proper' version.
Given that, its unlikely a new version will turn up soon.

Maltin's rating blurbs aside, I was under the impression that Clockwork
Orange got the "R" after a few years without needing to be cut, kind of
like Midnight Cowboy.

I wouldn't bet my LD player on this, but this is the way I remember it
from more than 20 years ago.
When I first saw ACO in 1971, I remember reading that Kubrick had cut
some material in order to avoid the X rating. This is real fuzzy but
I believe it included a bit of both the rape scene and the William Tell
scene. The originally submitted version, which would have been X was
shown in parts of Europe. I distinctly remember seeing the film a few years
later in the US advertised as the complete version. But I believe it was
still rated R at the second release because the rating boards standards had
changed. I do recall that there were additions in the scenes the second time
I saw it. But I think the differences amount to just a few seconds in several
places. I don't think the difference even adds up to a minute. So this
really complicates identification because it is quite possible that both
versions are 137 m.
So I am virtually certain that there were two release versions but I think
they both got an R rating several years apart.
So which version is the LD? I can't remember anything specific that's
missing, but its been almost 20 years. Still, I have an uneasy feeling that
something I've seen before isn't there. But Kubrick supervised the transfer,
so I suspect that this really is the full version despite my uneasiness.
If anyone has the "official" story please post, but do include a reference
please.

Hm. My memory is slightly different. I believe the ACO was
originally released as an "X" film an recut. I remember seeing
this while grounded by weather in Jonesboro, Ark when it first
came out.
I never recalled enough of the original to remember what was
missing when I later got it in video - many many years later.
That movie, and Last Tango in Paris, were the only two films I
remember ever seeing that were rated "X".
