I am in pre-production for an amateur film in the UK. Because we are self-
financed, we are obviously trying to keep costs down. However, at present
the main cost is for the editing suite. For the on-line edit (we have free
access to off-line) we are being asked for around 500 UK pounds per day.
This is around a third of our total budget for 3 days work (1K).

Does anyone know of any cheap (but good) editing suites, or organisations
that have editing suites loaned to amateur groups.

Also can someone give me an idea of costs in the USA. If this is much cheaper
then we may fly out just to edit :-).

Thanks,
Mark.

It might help if you give more information about the video format of your
production. For example, if the on-line suite is digital, then the price
is quite reasonable. If it is VHS, look elsewhere.

Also, since you have essentially unlimited off-line time, you may be able
to do your on-line work in a realtively short time. If the off-line suite
enables you to create an EDL that can be downloaded to the on-line suite
for semi-auto assemble editing, and if the on-line suite is capable of
tiling the edit, then the time spent on-line would be minimal.

I've never believed that cheap pricing was an acceptable alternative to
good planning...

Depending on what you need in your edit session, Editing in the US can
run from 150 per hour to 500 per hour. If you tell me how many machines
of what format, and what city I will give you a better idea.
Also unless you are shooting on NTSC in the UK, your conversion costs
will be to high to edit here.

Depending on what the Studio has, I've heard of Studios equiped with
Toasters and 3/4" editing decks going for $50 an hour
