Perhaps some more information would help. Do you have actual tapes in this
format that need to be edited? Could they be converted to a more modern
tape, such as DV or Beta?
There are many possible "home" editors, since equipment gets smaller and
more capable every year. A good example is:

Though it may not work for you. If you have just a player for your tapes,
you may be able to use this at home.
I hate to see an unanswerable question, but that may be the case. Best of

As for finding an old player, I would be surprised if the heads would still
work on any player that old, but perhaps the company may be able to convert

I think you really need to see the tapes to figure out what to do next. The
simple answer for your boss would be yes. The next phase would be figuring
out if it was worth finding an old (possibly broken) editing machine, or
paying some professionals to recover the old footage for you. Personally, I
would rather have someone else figure out the old footage, and get a
conversion to allow you to use a modern editor.
