ANy comments on the much maligned "new" soundtrack? I ordered the disc from
buy.com and would like to hear some opinions before I get it.

I didn't really notice anything. There were several scenes (like
where the camera was in the midst of a crowd of screaming people),
where I thought some ambient sound would be there, but I couldn't find
any sound coming out of the rear speakers at all. For a while, I
thought the connection might be broken, but I tried a different disc,
and it worked fine. I guess there was some low-level stuff there in
the music, but I didn't find it to be a particularly enveloping sound
field. Which only distracted me from the film because I kept *listening*
for it. :-) Next time I watch it, I'll just accept it.

Gotta run,

Don

I just watched this. If you've seen the movie a lot, it's somewhat
distracting and "new" sounding. But it's not as bad as I thought it was
going to be, especially with regards to the (reportedly) newly recorded
sound effects. It is a different experience from the original, which is
still disappointing.

I thought the movie looked and sounded great, the 5.1 mix sounded MUCH
better than the 5.1 on "Wrath of Khan".I strongly suspect only the music
was remixed,I've seen this movie lots of times, and didn't notice any new
sound effects or any glaring changes other than the music.

I admit I didn't notice any new effects either. I've seen this movie
about 75 times (seriously), so I think I would have noticed (especially
since I was trying to notice). But some folks were insisting there were
brand new effects in the mix shown on ABC (which is presumably the same
mix as this one). So, what were they?

Well, if new sound effects were recorded for things like this, they were
apparently incidental enough that they passed me by. The only thing I
questioned was the whale song after Quint finishes his Indianapolis
tale.

I'll go back and listen to that; you're right that there was a ricochet
at that point.

It seemed pretty clear to me that a few incidental sound effects had been
re-recorded, at least, to bring them up in the mix without distortion (the
sound of Quint's machete striking the wooden deck was one), but what I
_really_ noticed was that someone had removed the ricochet-like sound of
Brody's bullet hitting the oxygen tank.

Does anybody hear that in the 5.1 track?

It's gone. In fact, there is a beat of *silence* at exactly that
point. Watch the "making of" documentary. This scene is in it, with
the original soundtrack, and the ricochet is there.
