To my knowledge, the Epson R200 & R300 (they have the same print engine)
are the only truly inexpensive inkjet printers that will print directly on
a CD or DVD. Print quality is excellent, but you need to buy blank media
that is specially designed for inkjets. (Epson has some more expensive
models that will also print to disks, but neither HP or any others offer a
low end printer that does what you want.)
I've been extremely pleased with my R200. The only drawbacks I've found
are: printing is a bit slow; the ink is slow to dry - works best if you
can give it overnight; and the ink is not water resistant, it will run and
smear if you get it wet. However, thermal ink printers are considerably
more expensive.

Is it your image source material or the printer/media? The blank printable
media come with a matte finish in silver or white. For most image
situations you'll want the white, IMO. I also usually tweak the images in
Adobe Photoshop, but I do a lot of work from digital photos or scans.
An ink jet on a matte CD/DVD just isn't going to give you that glossy, wet
look, but I'm not sure that is what you're after.

Do you get the kind of results you want when you print to a good photo
paper? If yes, then you know the printer is capable of the image quality
you'd like and it is a media issue. If no, it sounds like your printer is
off.
You might also try a different brand of printable CD. I use Taiyo Yuden
printables and am very pleased with the results. Of course, maybe I'm
easier to please than you. <g>
I have never tried doing any pictures on anything other than DVDs.

I plan on using TY next time I order DVDs more so for the quality of the
disk than for the printable surface so will see what they print like in
comparison to what I have now.
I am hard to please or pretty fussy to be truthful. Just wondered if you
changed anything as far as brightness gamma contrast etc. Do you use the
Epson DVD software for your printing?
Thanks
