I am thinking about getting a dvd recorder shortly but am concerned if I should
wait. It would be around $500 and I want to convert my videocassettes over to
DVD. The only problem I have is I don't want to go through all of this and
then just a couple years from now realize I should have gone with blu-ray. I
know it may be a couple years before it comes out and then a little longer
before the price gets to a point people buy it but how long is that.

Is it something that's 5 years off? Is it something that may take awhile to
catch on just like DVD did at first?

My one other concern, I've heard that blu-ray dvd players/recorders won't play
regular dvd's. Is that true? Once again, I hate to convert my whole
collection over to find out I have to convert once again to go with blu-ray. I
know it's a blue laser but it seems to me they could put a red laser in as
well.

As well I've heard there will be another standards war with some companies
already working on a 2nd standard for blu-ray and as well there are already
plans for 100 gig dvd's so before blu-ray is even out seems like the standard
after that is being worked on so I guess there is no end and maybe blu-ray
won't catch on before the one after.

Wasn't the original Pioneer DVD-R burner over 3 grand (US$), and closer to
5?

It was an authoring unit, not intended for consumers.

It is easy to watch blu-rays now with a blu-ray ripper for example Aunsoft blu-ray ripper. with it, you can transfer blu-ray to other formats for other use. It has both windows and Mac version.
