Having done the CD-R thing for years, I'm now currently investigating
a DVD-Writer solution that will allow me to make copies of
commercially available DVD films from Blockbuster etc for personal use
(please, no lectures about copyright!)
I am aware that many DVD films, eg Coyote Ugly, are in excess of 7GB,
and therefore I have concluded that DVD-R and DVD+R are not really
suitable for this purpose.
However, I notice that DVD-RAM has a capacity of 9GB+, and this should
be sufficient for just about any dual-layer film to fit onto. I was
thinking of getting a Panasonic SW-9571 DVD-ROM drive, that can write
to DVD-RAM as well as DVD-R.
I am also aware that Sony do a great drive, the DDU-500AX, but it
doesn't seem to support any format with a native capacity of over
4.7GB.
There is also a Panasonic set-top player, the DVD-RA82, that supports
playback of DVD-RAM.
My question is this: Apart from the current high cost of blank DVD-RAM
media, are there any other hardware/software issues to consider before
purchasing the equipment? All my current AV kit is Panasonic, so I
suspect that discs authored on the SW-9571, known as the "Panasonic
DVD-Burner II" would play back on the RA-82 set top player without
difficulty. The only fly in the ointment is that although copied films
would fit onto DVD-RAM nicely, I could only play them back on my RA-82
player. Playback on virtually anyone else's machine would be
impossible.
The other option is to go for the Sony drive, which I understand is
faster to record DVD-R (4x versus 2x for the Panasonic). Suggestions
as to which way to go would be appreciated, together with comments on
my proposed plan.
Finally, I realise that DVD-RAM discs cost about the same as movies
purchased on DVD! (15-18UKP), but this is really more of an
'experiment' than a cost-saving exercise, plus I can erase and record
films when I've finished watching them.
All input appreciated!
