I can go the upgrade route from some of the programs that I already have, buy
new stand-alone, or use the included utilities, but want to get some ideas on
the best program(s), especially ones that will not muck up Encore. I know that
the software from the HP will not work if any other DVD utility is on the
machine, and I hate its interface, so I consider it OUT.
I've read the archives of this, and other NG's, and have seen a ton of
discussion on both the Nero and Roxio products, but nothing addresses working
with Encore installed.
DVD "authoring" is fairly new to me, though I've been burning CD/DVD's since
the Adaptec days - struggling to find a really good program. What are the
thoughts of the subscriber-base? I'm not looking for freeware, but would like
this software to be somewhat budget conscious, as I just spent a ton of $ on
Adobe. I don't have to go any upgrade route, and don't mind a new stand-alone,
but one that will work with Encore. What is currently the best?
Thank you for your time and your thoughts. I have X-posted to the two groups
that I think might offer the best information. I did this to keep the thread
intact for such time as the input might benefit someone else in time to come.
I hope that this is not a problem.

Just a thought until the Adobe fanatics show up; I use the burning
application that is incorporated into TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6
(TDA) to burn data DVDs, as well as video DVDs. With TDA,
if you select a folder that isn't a VIDEO_TS folder, the writing
tool will ask if I want to burn a Data DVD. Perhaps Encore
can also, burn data DVD like my $50 Authoring program.

I use Adobe Encore for DVD authoring. After using several
other programs (with literally zero success), it was a pleasure
to switch to Encore where I have had 100% success.
I use Encore to make a disc image file and then I use DVDdecrypter
to burn the image to the DVD discs. I frequently have to make 20-
50 or more copies, so I save the image files for future duplicating.
DVD decrypter gives a *FAR* better indication of what kind of
discs you are using, and a log file and a great progress and buffer
indicators, etc.
Yes, I frequently use Encore to author/burn DVD video discs
with added data content. A very convienent feature.
I too have Adobe Production Studio and have used Encore quite a lot in
burning DVD's
However a word of warning if you are intending to burn DVD's using encore
which contain a lot of still material. I tried to create a DVD in Encore
which contained about 300 stills and the Encore UI was very slow - almost to
the point of being unusable. For example, it you tried to do anything to a
menu it could take up to 5 minutes to respond - on a 3ghz 2gb ram machine.
This is because Encore has this habit of re-enumerating all of the project
assets under certain circumstances - making it very slow. if you don't have
many assets, this can work in your favour.
My work around was to create slide show mpeg files in Ulead DVD picture show
and then import the mpegs into Encore. Instead of 400 stills I have 4 mpeg
movies, which Encore was much happier with.

I do appreciate your caveat. As a photographer, more than a videographer, I
will be working with tons of still assets. Thanks for the heads-up.

Richard,
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm off to Google DVDdecrypter now. Since Adobe
Production Suite is new to me (only used Pinnacle to date) I want to set this
new box up with all of the right stuff. My experience with most "burning"
software is that it is not only nearly worthless (except for the most mundane
burning), it really mucks up a system and a lot of other software in the
process. As I have several other machines, that can do the plain-vanilla
burning, I'll just transfer the data to them and use Nero, or whatever,
keeping the workstation clean, until I find a good fit for a burning app.
Appreciated,
Hunt
