Hi all,

I'm asking if anyone can share or post a more robust DV Codec that
will allow me to export moveis from premiere in Type-1 DV format.

currently, the only AVI dv codec I have is the Sony DV Codec which
only exports in Type 2. Here's the typical route I have to take to
edit/import/export right now:

Using Ulead Video Studio 4, I can capture video in AVI Type 1 format.
In order to use it with Media Studio 6 or Premiere 5.1c, I first have
to convert it to Quicktime DV format.

Then I can edit it in Premiere and export it in Quicktime DV format
once more. I then load that up in VS4 again, convert it once more to
AVI type-1 which is teh only format that will go back to tape
properly, and then I can put it to tape.

NEedless to say, this is a very convoluted process that takes up too
much time and disk space.

I am interested in any locations I can download a more robust DV codec
that Premiere will be able to access. Thanks!

I've known about but just now tried DVCAP from
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Office/7844/dvcapchoice.htm

I don't know if you need the Pyro card to use it, but it works with my Pyro
card and I was able to make an AVI and use it in Premiere with no
conversions.

Your process does sound convoluted. Why don't you just stay in QT DV the whole
way? I use Digital Origin's FireWire card which always uses QT, and I believe
they have a product posted at their site for those with FireWire ports built-in
to their systems to do the same thing.

QT works fine within Premiere, exports via Premiere to tape & offers the
advantage of preserving source tape timecode ... at least it does with the DO
software/board combo.

Try www.digitalorigins.com

I recommend getting a Raptor, MotoDV, or Dv200 if you want to use
Premiere. All those workarounds with the Pyro are not worth the
hassle... plus the Microsoft codec has horrible quality.

Thanks for the heads up on DVCAP. Is DVSoft Microsoft's codec? I suppose
when I start outputting to tape (instead of just to the web like I do now)
I'll find out which codecs are best.

Oh no, DVsoft is Adaptec's codec. It's installed with the Adaptec
Hotconnected package as well as by Videowave 3. Dont confuse this with
SoftDV which is a Quicktime DV codec from Digital Origin. The Microsoft
codec doesn't actually say "microsoft codec" when you select it to
render. You usually see something in the order of, "DV renderer." But
you're usually limited to using the codec which is required by the
hardware you purchase. For instance, Raptor users use the Canopus codec
(with the exception of EditDV), Digital Origin users use SoftDV codec,
DV200/300 users use the miroDV codec (actually Sony), Studio DV uses
Microsoft directshow DV codec (type 2), Pryo/Ulead bundle uses
Microsoft directshow DV codec (type 1). I'm not sure what DV500 uses. I
heard the Matrox RT2000 uses a type 1 codec but that it has a clever
way of working with Premiere. So basically, when you pick your
solution, that's the codec you will be primarilly working with.
