DV formats - data rate and compression?

cant wait to buy a digital video camera, canon xl1 looks really
good.... its my understanding that the data rate is 3.5 meg / second
for digital video...there are also a few different standards which i
think could be combined easily on the computer and output to any
standard ie. svhs, composite, dv, mini dv etc ??? in premiere for
example, has anyone edited dv and output with and without compression?
and what were the results? also, any problems with the audio? any
other comments on dv editing would be greatly appreciated, the 1 year
countdown has begun and i have to start planning hahah

The standard DV compression rate works fine. The only real problems I'm having
are losing audio sync in Premeire.
