Glad to see some interest on Targa1000...

My machine - Dell dual pentium 100, 32meg mem., 4.2 gig baracuda, NT
Workstation w/service pac 4.

Targa 1000 produces STUNNING (great) quality and results with
truevisions DVR app which comes with board. Absolutely no problems
here.

When try to use with Premiere (which I have, I think, setup to
truevisions specs) the quality sucks!!! When in capture, have video but
no audio while waiting to record segment; audio does come on when I
push record.

In construct window, can't get transitions to work properly. I'm set up
for 1/4 screen previews; Lots of stuttering and jerky. Do you have to
MAKE MOVIE every time you do somthing new to see what you really
have??? Yuk!

Since Premiere comes with the board I would expect better results.
My video frame of reference is our Media 100 (a world class solution to
NLE) But I really want to get somthing going on the PC side.

Any comments / suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'm certainly not one to tell you how to get a Targa 1000 to work
because I've had one over a month and have worked 3-4 hours a day trying
to get it up & going and so far my best results are only about like the
ones you describe, but maybe I can make your path a little shorter by
telling you what I've learned so far. First, Targa's tech support tells
me that you won't hear sound until you press the RECORD button in
CAPTURE MOVIE mode. I know . . . I know . . . Furthermore, make
sure you have the latest software from Targa. It's now 1.4. My card
came with 1.0 & it was disastrous. You can download the 1.4 from
Targa's website (truevision.com). If you have a Matrox videocard there
is some sort of known conflict between it & Premiere 4.2. (This took a
long time to figure out. The first person I talked to at Matrox wasn't
real sure what video capture was!) They will e-mail you the fix or
write me and I'll send it to you. Funny, my problem is just the
opposite. I have my biggest problems after I MAKE MOVIE. It looks like
a poor print of keystone cops with lots of stutters & artifacting. I
wholeheartedly agree that it seems silly to bundle software with a
product that handicaps the performance of the product. I must say,
though, that the support folks at Truevision are great people. They
know me on a first name basis now & it's very refreshing to deal with a
company that provides an 800 number & doesn't treat you like an idiot
when their product is misbehaving. As everyone who has ever dealt with
Microsoft or Lotus probably knows, it's rather disconcerting to have to
pay a long distance toll and a $35 support fee only to realize you know
more about the product that the people you're talking to!
Also, many kind folks have e-mailed me to report that their Targa rivals
Media 100 for quality. I'm hopeful that I will soon be one of those
enthusiastic zealots who preaches the virtues of Truevision!
Good luck! We're all in this together!

Wow! It seems like there's a lot of problems out there with your
Targa1000. I'm a dealer with several customers who are quite happy
with the product, although installation has been universally a
pain! Can I offer T1000 prospects a bit of advice in order to avoid
problems/conflicts?

1) If you don't have the pc yet, check with Truevision for the
approved and tested list. It's not large, but the products on it
work right. After all, your goal should be good video, not good
video using the SM$AFJASHG WIAR)@ rn motherboard that just came
out!

2) Relax..no matter what you do you will probably have problems
along the way in installing and tweaking the product. It's like
being a computer "shade tree mechanic"..sure, you may have changed
the oil yourself or rebuilt the carb, added sheepskin seat
covers..but that doesn't mean you'll be able to swap transmissions
without making sure you buy the right parts, read the manual and
plan to get sore from hauling crap around! Which brings me to my
3rd suggestion..

3) Let a pro do the transmission!! If you buy the product from a
local, qualified dealer with experience and/or training they'll be
able to guide you through the process or even..GASP..just do it for
you! Sure it will cost money, but how much is that 4000hours of
gripiing and complaining going to cost you..phone bills..doctor
bills..etc.

My understanding is that the speed and number of CPUs will effect
rendering speed, but not through-put to the screen. YUP! You've got to
'make a movie' in order to see what you've just edited together. Active
Movie does NOT fix this problem, but Premiere 5.0 probably will. I've
heard it's very cool, and will be here around the end of the year.
