I have finalized various mini-DVD's made with the camera and after
placing them in the PC DVD drive, copied only the VOB files to my hard
drive (and formatted the mini-dvds for reuse). While I can play the
VOB files on the PC, I cannot seem to edit the files. How can I
convert these to a file type that is readable by a home-owner-type
editing program such as Ulead Video Studio? My end-goal is to burn
full size DVD's to send to family.

Have I messed up irretrievably by not getting the other files (.ifo,
.bup? Or don't they really matter?

And if I download a conversion software, what is the best type and
specs to use. Goal will be to view at the highest resolution on TV
screens from DVD.

Thanks in advance.

I recently had the same problem. I tried at least 6 various utilities
before I found 2 that worked.

Go to:

to read my tale of woe, message # 6 contains a description of how I made
it work.

What an amazingly arrogant post. Do you think everyone
that counts has an Adobe account? Given this post I suspect
that your "tale of woe" is really one of your incompetence.

You say that you found "two that worked" but you refuse
to include them in your post. The reader must follow your
ramblings before you will treat then to your conclusions.
(But again, only if they have an Adobe account.)

For the OP: Give www.VideoReDo.com a try. Next time
you might copy the whole folder that has the .vob files ;
probably a VIDEO_TS folder. Then there are a few more
options available.

You might consider TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 (TDA)
as it has an "Add DVD video..." button and process to
properly extract the MPEG data.

Luck;

VOB files are basically MPG2 files. Programs such as Sony Movie Studio,
Ulead Movie Factory, and more will import and alow edits to files from
DVDs. If them don't want to import the files, you can often just rename
them to Mpg extensions and then they will play nice.

Typically the beginner level programs are wizard based and will let you
shoot your files direct from edit to DVD and handle all the steps for
you. They won't give you a ton of flexibility however.

Go to the Ulead, Sonymediasoftware, Adobe, ect sites and look at the
specs and prices of their basic editing packages and pick whats you feel
would work for you.

And, of course, IFOEdit will most likely create adequate
replacements for the missing files just from the VOBs - thus
making the set available to all edit programs which work on DVD
structures, even the one the OP was hoping to use.
http://www.ifoedit.com/guides.html

Rather than be daunted by the myriad capabilities and unusual
layout of this FREE program, just load it and push the "Make
IFOs" button.

If you have ULEAD editing software this will accept them if you create
copies of the .vob files on the harddrive and rename the copies to .mpg. If
that doesn't work then invest in VideoReDo as suggested above. The best
money you can spend. It will accept vob files and allow to cut, join, and
export in many other formats.

Max.
