What a nightmare, I have just spent the last 4 hours trawling through
the internet trying to get information on JLIP. I have noticed many
posts to this and other newsgroups all asking for help but I never see
any answers. If you can help, I would appreciate it

I have recently purchased a GR-DVF10 (I wish I hadn't) and I am
reasonably pleased with its performance, OK its a bit bulky and has no
DV in/out but hell! you get what you pay for. I am currently using a TV
card to capture video and stills through S video output but quality is
very poor. I really want to see how Jlip can help me get good stills
from the camera and help with video editing.

This camera has a jlip socket and the cable supplied is a small jack to
small jack. I have read that I need two things to get Jlip working with
my PC and camera

Hardware - Jlip to RS232 connector
Software - JVC JLIP Video Producer (for video editing) AND/OR JLIP Video
Capture (for Still captures)

Please can someone confirm this !!! I have seen at lot written about a
connector box, do I need this or will the cable be sufficient ???

I really need to know where I can get the hardware as I have noticed
that the software is available at
http://www.jvc.de/html/faq/Download/software/22/

Does anybody know of a supplier who could help ? OR does anybody have
the hardware I need for sale ? OR Is anybody out there who has made
their own cable from the instructions I have found at
http://www.baur-denzinger.de/support and would like to make one for me.

Please help and lets see if we can get the questions answered to help me
and everybody else struggling to understand JLIP.

Steve,

I have an unused kit containing all the pieces you're looking for. I'm
happy to sell it to you for what it cost me (£50) plus shipping from
the UK. I've thrown away most of the packaging, but I've not even
unwound any of the cables.

JLIP is a connection that allows you to control the camera's functions
from the PC (e.g., play, rewind, go to a timecode).
The box you would buy takes your video out from the camera and captures
a digital image.
It is no different than a video capture card except that it contains
software that can take a video image and deinterlace it.

JLIP will basically only let your PC control the camcorder. It serves much
the same purpose as LANC.

The video producer aspect is basically PC controlled linear editing - cuts
only I expect.

But beyond those generalisations, I can't help you - sorry.

Steve,
I have a JVC GR DVL40, this comes with the Video Producer and VIdeo Capture
software, a JLIP cable for those that have a JVC VCR with JLIP, assorted
other software from MR Presto for post capture still work.

Importantly the other cables it has are:
PC connection cable (RS232 to Camera)
Editing cable (JLIP)
Audio/Video cable (RCA to RCA)
DC cord
S-Video cable.

Using the PC connection cable allows video capture and still capture. The
editing software for video is very basic and merely reassembles assets
(scenes) into the order you want and adds transitions. You may aslo set
various AE at this stage if you haven't done so while recording, but thats
all. NO TITLES, NO AUDIO manipulation (although you can dub a basic sound
track if you recorded in 32khz).

So the JLIP is not required, the software and the PC cable is if you only
want to do the basic things these allow. JVC sell this kit as HS-V4KIT -
check the web site for prices and what else may be included. Personally I do
not think the extra expence would be worth it, better off with a third party
card/software combo that allows more flexability and expansion for what you
may do later on. Either way, if you have a DV in/out you can go for the
iLink (IEEE 1934 or Firewire) card, or the analogic cards.

good luck

Thanks for the link, the information has proved useful however it would
appear that the connector box is a little more than I actually need. I
have a jlip socket on the camera which I should be able to link directly
to the PC. One of the other posters has recomended a kit supplied by
JVC so I will be investigating further.

One thing I can promise that once I get to the bottom of this I will be
posting details...

David,

The more recent models of the JVC cameras include both the JLIP and the
normal 1394 link. The JLIP is used for still image capture to the serial
port of the computer using a device provided with the camcorder. The first
of these I had seen shipped with the GR-DVL9500. Other models had the JLIP
port but did not ship with the necessary cable...go figure. A friend of mine
in Bermuda went to great lengths to try and find the cable to no avail. He
soon abandoned the camcorder.

Many thanx Tez. I will see if I can track down this Kit from JVC.

There are recent JVC DV camcorders which like the old Pan AG-EZ1 lacked DV
in/out 1394 ports. Silly!

And to think there I was encouraging JVC's top brass to push Digital-S down
into the prosumer field witha 1394 equipped model. They'd omit the CD-ROM
with driver code!

So JLIP is also a serial data link for d/l stills to the PC's serial port,
noted. The camcorder is of course controlled by the PC during this process.

The comments were about JVC's proclivity to leave useful bits out - like a
1394 port on one recent PAL model (to achieve a price point - it was
pointless) and the JLIP cable on another.

I trust you are happy with your JVC.

I seem to have a very similar problem not having a JLIP cable
camcorder to PC with my JVC GR-DVL-20. Is this a simple cable as
shown on a picture of HS-V4KIT and who can give me the
connection of pins or is it a device as indicated in
http://www.baur-denzinger.de/support?

This cable is only for uploading fotos, and probably requires the JVC
software. It plugs in to the printer port I believe, but you would be
better of with a firewire card. ADS Pyro for about $70 is a better way
to go. Even an analog capture board might be a better and cheaper way
to go.
