Does DVD shrink even work with AVI files? I thought it was just for DVD
formats.

Downloaded movies in avi formats are quite often Xvid format files.
These are typically intended for viewing on your computer. I'm sure its
possible to convert it to a DVD, but you will need more steps. I've
heard from that Nero will transcode it and burn them onto DVD's.

DVDShrink does not work on AVIs, but only on DVDs. It doesn't need to
re-encode, but just throws away information.

In the case of an Avi, however, you need to re-encode the clip. For
instance, with VirtualDub. Open the file, then do "Video | Fast
recompress". Also, "Video | Compression", choose the codec (DivX, or
Xvid, I guess), and configure it to the needed bitrate (you may want
to use a bitrate calculator). Save that Avi.

If you download a movie in .avi (audio/video interleave) and it is
encoded with a divx or xvid codec then use this guide
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_avi_to_dvd.cfm

Otherwise take the original dvd and run it through dvd shrink
