Virtual Dub 1.97 will not recognize DivX capture codec - How do I fix this?

I found that when I go to capture a file using Vdub, and when you
go to select COMPRESSION, the DivX codec is missing, however XviD
is there, FFDSHOW is there, the Microsoft Codecs are there, Pic MJPEG
is there, but DivX is strangely missing.

I upgraded to DivX 7.0 thinking it may have missed something, but same
problem, no DiVX.

Am I doing something wrong now, as I believe in previous version you
could capture with DivX.

How can I make Vdub 1.97 recognize and capture with the DivX codec?

Thanks,

Frank

VirtualDub only recognizes old style VFW (Video For Windows) VCM
(Video Compression Manager) codecs. It does not recognize the newer
style DirectX/DirectShow codecs. Therefore, the key to using any given
codec with VirtualDub is to ensure that you have a VFW VCM version of
the codec installed on your system.

It's possible that the only version of the DivX codec that you have
installed on your system is a DirectShow type. That would cause the
problem that you're seeing, although it might be something else.

Of course, if you're trying to perform a capture operation, you would
need an encoding version of the codec installed. It's possible that
you have a VFW version of the DivX codec installed but it's a
decode-only version of the codec. That would also cause the problem
that you're seeing.

Personally, I gave up on both DivX and XviD years ago because they're
both based upon the old MPEG-4 Part 2 codec. I prefer the newer MPEG-4
Part 10 (aka AVC/H.264) codec for lossy encoding because it's more
efficient, although for capture, I would either capture uncompressed
or use a lossless codec such as Lagarith or HuffYUV.

If you should need to determine exactly which codecs (and type of
codecs) are installed on your system, I'd suggest that you try GSpot.

GSpot Codec Information Appliance

After you've gotten the program running, go to the 'List Codecs and
Other Filters' item on the program's "System" menu to see a list of
which codecs you've got installed.

Hope this helps.
