Spend another $300. Yep. I know that's a lot of money.
But it's the only real solution. Buy the Sony DVMC-DA1.

It allows you to *maintain* Canopus DV Raptor overlay
on your computer monitor during editing. Added bonus:
it converts analog to DV and vice versa. The DV Raptor
uses the Sony DVMC-DA1's hardware codec to maintain
overlay. So... during editing... it can replace your JVC GR-DVM5U
after you've captured your clips.
It's really the only way. JVC advises there's no way to disable
the shutoff on the GR-DVM5U... even if you remove the DV
tape. Good luck.
