I connect my VCR with cinch cable to the Canopus V-in terminal, but
don't see a picture on my capture screen on the PC (Vegas,
WinProducer). What do I do wrong? I have tried both a S-video/
composite plug with 7 and 4 pins. Neither give me a picture on the
screen.
Please help!

There is no product named "ADVC-1394" on the Canopus
website. I've never heard of it. Are you sure of the model #?

There are ADVC55, and ADVC110, and ADVC300 and
ADVC-HD50 and TwinPact100, but no "ADVC1394"??

On most of their other products that I am familiar with there
is a method to switch the mode to input (video into the computer)
or output (video out of the computer). Do you have the unit
set properly for input mode?

Does WinXP and/or Vegas recognize the Canopus box?

I think he is reading the number of the fireware port.

MPEG-1, MPEG-2, DV, NTSC, PAL, S-Video, composite video

"ADVC-1394 is a one-stop Plug and Play solution providing analog and DV
capture, a 1394 FireWire interface and a powerful content creation software
bundle. Canopus' proprietary DV codec technologies provide ADVC-1394 with the
best picture-quality preservation during analog to DV conversion. Other
converters can lose audio/video sync when capturing longer clips of analog
video. ADVC-1394 is the first inexpensive OHCI card that supports locked audio
when capturing from analog to DV, ensuring perfect audio and video
synchronization. ADVC-1394 is an easy-to-install PCI card, which uses native
operating system drivers supplied with your computer."

No, there was a Firewire/analog capture board made by canopus called the
Canopus ADVC-1394, its similar to my Pinnacle PCI board that has both
analog/firwire ports on the PCI based card.

Thanks, GMAN,

Apparently a discontinued product. After spoofing the Canopus web
page, I got a peek at the support info and it appears that it requires a
driver to be installed and lists compatibility with XP SP1.

Still waiting for the OP to reply to the original questions.
Plus the additional question about whether the driver is
properly installed.

Thanks all for your response. But I found the solution: when I also
connected the audio cable and disconnected the DV in-out cable, I all
of a sudden got the picture on the screen. Hooray!!! Only now one
problem: the VCR picture on the screen is shifted to the left with
approx 10%, leaving a black column on the right. Can I in one way or
another correct the horizontal position of the picture?

If you are in the USA, Make sure the capture software you are using is set to
NTSC
