I should add that it will suck in an empty tape carriage, which lets me
close the cover, but if a tape is in the carriage, it just sits there.

Question: does you camera have a removable backup battery (usually a
lithium coin cell such as 2016) to hold user settings, such as time
and time zone?
Sometimes taking both batteries out will reset such a problem.
Disconnect the camcorder from any AC supply, remove the regular
battery, then remove the coin cell.
Wait a while before restoring the coin cell. Then replace the
regular battery and try again.
Of course, all user settings will be lost, but that shouldn't be too
hard to redo.
I hope that works, otherwise it sounds like it's new camera - or
repair - time.
Rereading your post, I see that you're still under parts-only
warranty. Don't do what I suggested if there's a chance it'll void
the warranty, i.e., if it takes surgery to remove the backup
battery. I've seen cameras where the B/U battery is behind a normal
door or cover and others where it's hidden and apparently requires
major disassembly to be removed.
Of course, if it's just the humidity sensor, all you have to do is
move to the desert and let it dry out.
