I am trying to understand the concept of 16:9 vs regular 4:3. I know
that if one wants to transfer his material from mini-dv to film, is
better to shoot his material on 16:9 mode. Why is that the case?
Another question: If I shot with 16:9 mode, when I capture the clips, I
should capture with 16:9 as well; but when I export the movie (let say
in premiere), how should I export it so that I can keep my 16:9 ratio?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Before you buy.
it's simply because film uses an aspect ratio closer to 16:9 than to
4:3. on the other hand, since most cameras have a 4:3 ccd, there will be
no difference in quality either way. actually, the transfer house might
do a better job in cropping your 4:3 footage than the camera would if
you were using 16:9 in the first place. just be sure to frame for 16:9
while shooting to allow for the cropping.

since 16:9 is anamorphic and uses the full 4:3 frame, use 4:3 all the
way through and you'll be fine. just set your video monitor to 16:9 or
you'll see a squeezed image while editing.
