We have a Mac based Video Machine with Studio Control box. We're using
Sony EVO 9850 Hi-8 machines, though we also have connected Sony BVW
machines (BetaSP). The short answer is great bang for the bucks. For the
price, nothing else is close. What it does (machine control, frame
accurate editing - if your machines are frame accurate - with digital
effects and graphics) it does well. We have seen a demo of the disk
recorder (DPR) and the quality of the digitized image is undistinguishable
from an anlaog tape source. E-Mail us for any specific questions.

Hello Net.heads,

I need to buy a new video editor and have been impressed with FAST's
Video Machine as a tape controller. I'd get the SC option for LTC. I
need both EDL output (for offline) and decent video quality (ie
industrial). Future upgrade path to non-linear looks good too. FAST
looks hard to beat for functionality and price.

Anybody out there actually used one much? How well does it work? Any
problems, raves, etc. would be appreciated. TIA!

I've had my Video Machine for almost two weeks now. It's great! I have the
PC VM/SC and the Professional Filter option. I recommend the filter -- it
cleans up the output frequency response considerably.

Customer support is available through CompuServe (GO MULTIBVEN). There are
FAST technical support people there for both the PC and Mac products.

Hi All,

I'd like to know if anyone can recommend or if anyone uses the
Spigot II Tape board from Supermac. Is it worth it? What are the results
like? I am trying to figure out how it will perform with my system
I have a PowerMac 7100, with 24MB RAM, internal, standard Apple 250 MB
hard drive, and slightly faster external drive with 500 MB (I believe its stats
are 8.0 seeks times and 2.0 MB/s sustained. Will i be able to capture 30fps
at any size?
Also, if there are any other boards that might be a better option for
me, I'd love to hear about them. I am looking for a board that can capture
significant amounts of time at once (say a couple of minutes), which I can then
take into Premiere 4.0 to do my rough edit.
Lastly, am I going to be totally screwed with the NuBus in my computer,
as opposed to the supposedly upcoming PCI board, and do I have any options
(like is there going to be anyway to upgrade, thereby making such a board
totally obsolete)?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Bob Doyle reviewed the Video Machine in the October 94 issue of New Media
(giving it an excellent rating in all categories). Check it out. You mention
you need EDL output. Note the Video Machine Lite does not support EDL output
but the DP/R option does. Awesome value in this system. As a PC user, I'm glad
to see such a high-quality (and, importantly, reasonably affordable) non-linear
product for the PC.

We have the MAC version of Video Machine in house. In one word
"don't". The PC version is much more mature and from every post I've
read, the superior version.

It's okay. The image is 16 bit, and interpolated when reaching 640x480.
It's an inexpensive solution, being under $900. It's only really useful
for CD-ROM development and hobbyist/educational usage.

Maybe at smaller sizes with low quality. The 7100 is not a great
performer for digital video and audio.

A couple of minutes from Spigot II Tape(tm) will eat your space quickly.
You may need a second drive. It'll do okay in smaller sizes and lower
quality settings for rough edits. Might now be too pretty with those
settings, but, again, it'll work for a hobby/learning experience, or a low
budget CD-ROM development environment.

There is an alternative. Find a DF 1.6 in a fire sale. It's not going to
be updated, but is already PowerMac compatible, as long as your 7100 has a
cache SIMM upgrade. The same lower size, low quality setting will be
true, but the color and quality will likely look much better.

That depends on how long you wish to wait. PCI machines are still rumor,
which tends to means that they aren't shipping anytime soon. If you can,
try to get one of the newest PowerMacs (announced on the 4th). These have
fast capture rates, even with the slower models. Draw your own
conclusions. I have done some work on the currnet 7100/66, with a DF and
a Spigot II Tape (tm) and have found both to be adequate for doing
hobbyist work. Neither functions as well as a SpigotPower AV in a
7100/66AV, but the AV card upgrade for your 7100 is about $500, which
brings your price up higher than a 7100 with a $1K DF or >$1K Spigot II
Tape.

Hmmm, it may be preferable, but I know for a fact it's not required for
compatibility. I seem to remember Michel or someone saying it's more of a
factor with the SPAV. We get DF's max throughput of around 1.1 MB/sec
without a cache.
