Can someone confirm that the Canon XM1 is the same as the GL1 ?
(difference PAL - NTSC camera I think ?)
Thanks,
Marcel
They're the same camcorder. Apart from the PAL/NTSC difference, it's
important to note that, while the GL1 has DV *and* analogue input, the XM1
only has DV-in. Boo!

See http://www.canondv.com/gl1/index.html for US and Australia.
See

A big different is that the GL1 has analog IN. The XM1 has no analog IN. I
think it is disabled by softwarefor tax-reasons in Europe. And indeed the
GL1 is NTSC and the XM1 is PAL.
I'm looking for XL1-owners, that will give the hex-data from the XL1 when
set in service-mode so we can compare the data to see what the different
are. By changing the values in the XM1 analog IN is to enable !?!.
I will try to do it in the same way as shown on
http://www.xs4all.nl/~bbouwens/dv/intro.html for the Canon MV20, MV200 and
MV10 to enable DV-IN.
The XM1, GL1 has a remote control WL-D73 and looks very familiair to the
WL-D71 remote control.
Maybe is there anyone out there in the US that will give more information
from the GL1 manual about analog -IN.

Having DV-in entitles the XM-1 to be taxed and included in the VCR quota by
the Eurocrats. The analogue makes no difference.
BTW, do people realise Europe is controlled by a Gang of 20 (Commissioners)
who are not elected, can only be sacked en mass, and for whom there is no
mechanism to punish gross corruption even when proven.
Even the Euro-parliament has little power, especially over the
Commissioners.
Britain is wise to limit their power over Sovereign Britain, don't be fooled
by Tony Blair - keep your Quid! Dumping the Commonwealth was bad enough, but
the spiritual sons of Hitler and Mussolini are alive and well in Europe (esp
obvious now in Austria and Russia, but increasingly in EC nations like
Germany), so don't get any further into bed with them.
Anyway, back on topic: no, omission of transcoding (analogue-in) in the XM-1
is probably more associated with differences between PAL and NTSC - this
would explain why it's not the GL-1 in PAL markets.
My 20 EuroCents!
