I am attempting to build a non linear editing system. I have seen the
systems advertised for $50k+ but I believe I can build one for a LOT
less. I intend to build the system on a Pentium 166 with 128k of RAM
running Windows NT. Has anyone ever attempted this before? I need some
advice desperately

Upgrade the system from 128k to 128M RAM.

(Sorry, had to do it)

There are several options available, depending on your price range and
output requirements. If you follow this NG you'll see most of them
commented on here.

I use a system at home that uses the Perception Video Recorder and
capture daughter card from DPS (www.dps.com). Excellent video, but keep
in mind that transitions are unaccelerated unless you add another card.
If I'm doing a project with lots of layers, transitions, etc. I usually
set things up and render out the final movie over night. Considering my
computer is only a P75 with 32 meg of Ram, I would expect your system to
run faster. I went with this board for several reasons, the most
important one being I wanted the highest quality output in my price
range.

Since, I am putting together a system (Basic Pentium box running
NT4.0)for my day job and just got a quote for the hardware I need to
complete the system I can give you an idea of costs. After the base
computer:

Perception PVR and daughtercard: $2450
Mediatrix Audiatrix Sound Card: $299
9 Gig Seagate Baracuda: 2099
(I will also use an external enclosure for the drive and cables, which
will add about $150 more)

Just add an editing program like Adobe Premiere, Star Video Action NT or
Insync's Speed Razor and you're basically ready to start editing. To
edit longer form pieces (anything over about 20 minutes) you would want
to add hard disk space. This setup will give you broadcast quality
results. Of course if you need more features, you can also add a 3D
animation program like Lightwave (www.newtek.com), a sound editing
program like SAW from Innovative Quality Software(www.iqsoft.com), a
compositing program like Digital Fusion distributed by 4DVision
(www.4DVision.com), etc.

Other options include the Targa series of cards from Truevision (street
prices from $1,600 to over $10,000 depending on features and output
quality) or the Plum card from Interactive Images (It comes bundled with
premiere and some other stuff for around $4,000 I think). I am sure
others who have used the other cards can tell you more about them.

Depending where you live, you may even be able to locate dealers nearby
that will demo systems based on these cards.

Good luck.

Basically I would recommend the following;

Perception main board
Perception capture board
Turtle Beach sound card

As many Seagate ST19171N 9Gb drives as you can afford!

It should cost easily under $10K, depending...

Actually, there already is a pc based non-linear system on the market and
for a very affordable price. It is called the "Blossom". It sells for
$14,500.
It is from Creative Equipment out of Flordia.
( If anyone would like more information on the Blossom you can give us a
