A barker channel is a channel in which the cable compnay advertises its
services like the pay perview and premium channels. These ads are usually
played over scrambled channels that you don't pay for. For example, if
you don't pay for HBO and it appears on channel 50, instead of seeind a
scrambled picture, you'll see an ad for a pay perview movie or something
like that.

Cable Co's using addressable boxes set the box up so if the box is turned
off by them. or turns itself off because of lack of authorization from the
head end,
the barker channel is the only channel displayed on your TV from the box.

A barker channel is one which advertises permium and PPV services
available on the particular system. It usually includes ordering info,
sometime video clips of the shows, and may offer special deals, like
order a PPV movie and get $5 off a pizza, or get a second movie 1/2
price.
In other words, its advertising instead of entertainment or
information.
