The problem seems to be that even splitting the cable one time there is
to much picture
quality loss on too many channels. What good is a 42" plasma if the
picture sucks?
The comcast cable guy basically said "we can guarantee a good signal
strength thru
the cable that runs into your house but once you split it then thats
your problem"
whats the secret to a good picture???
Ken
If using larger than a 3 way, look at the splitter closely. some legs on
some splitters have less signal loss than others do. A 3way may be labeled
7.5,, 7.5, and 3.5. Use the 3.5 leg to feed more signal to where ever you go
next with either the more splits, or the longer run.
The snotty Comcast guy should have given you signal levels at the back of
the set or at least entry point to the home.
90% of all service calls are from poorly installed connectors. Cheap cable
will do it too- avoid radio shack for either. People don't know that the
copper center conductor of a cable is only copper coated stainless steel.
The signal rides on this copper skin. if scratched in the slightest you can
get what is called "the skin effect" which can cause frequencies to drop out
with no reason or pattern to them. The lazy ass from Comcast could have told
you that, and what freq were dropping out, but lazy is lazy. Could be dumb
too, not knowing how to work an SAM.(signal amplitude meter). My bet is
still on a connector unless you have 100 TV's hooked up. You can cut a good
connector with just an ordinary utility knife without dinging the copper but
it takes years, and a misadjusted stripping tool is about as good as having
the dog chew the first cut off.
Don't you dare allow a tech to come in and lower the sharpness or picture
settings on your new 42" plasma TV. That's the oldest dodge there is and the
first step most take. But now that it's in, do a cable jiggle, and see if
the pix pop or jump or change. That can nail it down to the right chunk of
cable. and if you're dealing with any screw on the rule is finger tight with
1/8 of a turn with a wrench. If someone went gorilla with a wrench at the
back of your set and the problem is there cal Comcast's quality control
department, the county cable office and lodge a complaint. Replace or
repair.
If they ask where you got the information, tell them the National Cable
Technical Institute's Installer course, you just happed to run across a copy
of at a flea market.
