I will soon be leaving to vacation in Costa Rica and have heard from someone that there has recently been some political unrest and that apparently some shooting is going on. Has anyone else heard of this? Any suggestions on places to avoid (or to go to)?

My stepson and his girlfriend just got back from 12 days in Costa Rica. They
saw no signs of unrest at all. The one bad incident is that Mara shoes (her
only hiking shoes) were stolen off the front step of the cottage they were
staying in, not near a town at all.

They liked the parks, the food was very disappointing in general (he
commented on a lot of undercooked rice?), the beaches were nice. They saw
lots of monkeys and many birds. Local people were friendlier on the Pacific
coast than on the Caribbean side where they were. They both speak a little
Spanish which came in handy.

Costa rica is likely the most stable government in Central OR South America.
people are better educated than most CA and SA countries, and they are regarded
as friendlier. That doesn't mean there is no crime, but the likeihood of a
violent crime is far less in Costa Rica than other places.

Tourism in Costa Rica has a long track record. It is probably safer than going
to any big U.S. city.

have fun.
