Italy to Greece by Ferry?

about the Ferry Boat service? We will be staying in Rome & would like
to either go directly to Athens or begin island hopping among the Greek
Isles with a final destination of Athens.
How long do the ferry boats take in making the crossing?
Are there various levels of accomodations?
What are the costs (approximate)?
Is it possible to make advance reservations from the U.S.?
As an alternative, does someone know of a (moderately priced) cruise
line that offers a similar trip with island stops?

In answering your questions. there are ferries leaving from brindisi,
which is about three hours by train from rome, which go to corfu. this
trip i heard is about eight hours. from corfu you take a little ferry
ride to patras and from patras you take about a two hour bus ride to
athen. most island hopping ferries depart from athen. i am going there
this summer too. if you found out anything interesting about the
connection to greece from italy then please let me know. otherwise, enjoy
your travels!!

Don't take the ferry unless you really can't afford a flight. The ferry
takes about 24 hrs and is a complete waste of time. Spend a few bucks
more, fly and enjoy your time.

terribly charming. Also be aware that one cannot easily "island
hop", since the Greeks have devised a system by which all boats LEAVE
from Piraeus (the main Harbor outside Athens), and each route is
unique. Therefore if already on Island "a" it is not obvious that
one can get to Island "b" unless there is a ferry going from Piraeus
to Island "a" to Island "b".
I found I made numerous trips back to Athens to start on a different
route. but if you're sticking to one set of islands - the Cyclades,
or the Eubean, then you can hop from island to island using the same
ferry line.
Sorry if this was confusing...only slightly more than the Greek
shipping schedules. Also be aware, that though a schedule is
published, it is only a "guide." Ships come and go based on whim,
weather and wisdom of captain. But that is all part of the fun.
Having lived there for 2 years I learned to love the random chaos.

Hi John,
1) The ferry doesn't take 24 hrs if you don't leave from Venice. From
Ancona it's about 12 hrs to Patras and from Brindisi even shorter.
2) I *rally* think it is a question of taste. If you consider the time on the
boat as lost, it is boring, but it isn't! Relax, swim in the pool, forget
about your work at home, the switched on kitchen light and all you forgot.
Enjoy the holidays to come slowly. I always take the ferry in the night and
I really sleep well (I always sleep outside). I like it. And if you like
comfort, you get it, ships are equipped with everything from good
restaurants to cabins with daylight (if you afford it).

I took it from Brindisi and maybe I hit it on a bad day but it did wipe out
a whole day for me. If I remember, it left 9pm ish and arrived at the
Greek mainland sometime in the late afternoon. There were plenty of delays
and other hitches on the way.

Pool? There must be different ships/ferries because you'd be lucky if you
could find something to eat on my ferry, never mind a pool :-) .

I went deck class, the ferry was hopelessly crowded and you were lucky to
get a windy bench on the outside.
I don't know - maybe I hit it a bad time. In any case, I was originally
planning to take the ferry both ways but decided to fly back from Athens.
A decision I don't regret.

I was wondering if I can get information about the ferry between
Greece and Italy (in my case, I will be going in that direction). What
points do the ferries connect? I know it goes from Greece to southern Italy,
but does it also go north up to Venice? I am pretty sure that Eurail is valid
on the Greece to southern Italy route, but is it also good on the Greece-Venice
route? Also, how long is the ferry ride usually from Greece to southern Italy?
