Philadelphia Gotchas?

gotchas or recommendations or special info on Philadelphia, I would
appreciate it.
We are travelling by air, arriving Mar 31 and leaving April 6. We want
to see Philadelphia and surrounding area. We figure to stay in the heart
of the city on the weekend when nice hotels have cheaper rates and tour
the countryside during the week.
We can also reverse that and possibly use hotel frequent stayer days
with Hyatt/Marriott during the week in the city.
Are cab/limosine fares from airport to downtown reasonable? We figure to
not have a car while in the city but use public transportation. We will
rent a car for other areas. How good is public transportation?

Why would you want to do this? The commuter rail runs frequently
(every 20-30 minutes, I think) between the airport and downtown.

Right. There are stops at each terminal and the train goes directly to
30th street station, the main AMTRAK station, followed by the old Reading
Terminal area, which is the new convention center at the very middle of
town. Both are convenient e.g. to the art museum. Reading Terminal is
about 10 blocks from the Independence Park area. Don't miss the Rodin
museum if you like sculpture. I believe you will be too late for the
flower show -- one of the world's three great ones and worth shifting
your dates for, if possible -- but perhaps not for the exhibit at the art
museum of the Barnes Foundation collection of impressionist paintings.
Before you go driving, and if you have access to the World Wide Web,
check my Guide to the Covered Bridges of the Philadelphia Region. Even if
bridges don't excite you, there's always good back-roading where there
are antique bridges.
Apart from that -- what are you interested in? Nature centers, restored
industrial estates and technological museums, music and shows? Philly is
long on variety -- have a lovely time.
