Florida keys traffic -- worst days?

What the days/times to avoid the highways in the keys in June? I'm
told the traffic on the keys can get pretty congested.

I'm considering a 5 day stay from Monday afternoon to Saturday morning
in Key Largo (driving from MIA airport on Monday afternoon).

Then driving from Key Largo to Key West and staying Saturday and
Sunday, driving back to Miami on Monday around noon.

Any red flags go up on this plan with respect to traffic? I expect
Saturday to be a heavy travel day...any particular times seem to work
best?

Your worst traffic will probably be getting out of Miami airport
on a work day. I have traveled among the keys and everyday is
about the same unless there is a special event, Powerboat Races,
Fishing Tourneys etc. When you leave the airport take 836 west
all the way until you get to the Floriday Turnpike, go south on
the turnpike, It joins with Rt. 1 near homestead. Whatever you
do, don't get on Rt. 1 in Miami and follow it all the way. There
is a traffic light every 50 yds. It will take you an hour
longer than going on the Turnpike.

The roads are good at 0300-0400 usually.......

weekends are the worst......

and the 100 miles from Largo to West can seem like 400 on a Saturday

Drive the speed limit & enjoy the views on both sides of the
road---watch out for the morons who pass on bridges & yellow lines &
enjoy the trip!
Its the Keys--relax--and drive on down.

One of our guides (Fodor's?) said that traffic to the Keys
is worst on Fridays, from the Keys on Sundays because of
Florida local weekenders. Flights are usually best if
you go outbound on a Saturday, traffic was fine for us
in mid-March after 2 PM (we left Chicago at 10:30 AM).

At http://www.previewtravel.com/ they have Fodor's online
for many popular destinations, while cnn.com, cnnfn.com
and biztravel.com have City Guide.

I saved the toll and stopped at every one of those lights. One of the
poorest decisions I ever made. Did get to see a lot of lights change from
red to green.

Definitely pack a picnic lunch for summer trips down through the Keys. Once
you pass Largo, that laid-back feeling should set in and your worries will
ease away.

Me too....had never been there, so I wasn't too sure how to go after leaving
the airport. I won't make that mistake again......

We got back to the airport REALLY fast........lesson learned.

Outbound and inbound if you want to avoid traffic on the "18mile stretch"
you can take the Card Sound toll road for $1.00 toll to cross the bridge.
This lets you avoid the "speed demons" on the stretch and also avoids
possible delays by the Jewfish Creek drawbridge. FYI the bridge opens every
half hour M-F and on demand on the weekends which can be a real pain. My
suggestion is to take Card Sound road whenever possible...it is actually
about 8 miles further but you will save time or at least frustration.
