We love to visit Botanical Gardens in the United States and have been to
many. Does anyone have any favorite they can recommend?

We have a bunch of nice ones in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Longwood Gardens in southeastern Pennsylvania is nice. There are also
several other nice gardens in the vicinity, although I'm not sure they
qualify as botanical gardens. There is a nice garden, I think all
outdoor, at Winterthur. The area also has other sightseeing
possibilities in the Brandywine Valley.

DC has a Botannical Garden right on the mall which is beautiful and impressive.
If you wish you can also go to the National Arboratum, which has a number of
gardens and facilities, and does a lot of garden research. Very nice.


Also Kenilworth Aquatic gardens is supposed to be lovely (I have not been
there).

But the Botannic Garden is great.

The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens in NYC is quite different from the New York
Botanical Garden (which is actually in the Bronx). Its central feature is a
Japanese garden dating from the 1920's, which was recently completely
restored.

There are several gardens in Central Park.

The Cloisters in NYC is an art museum, but also has several gardens modeled
after gardens in European monasteries.

Longwood Gardens in the Brandywine Valley of Pennsylvania (near
Philadelphia) is one of the largest in the US, at 1,000 acres.

Wave Hill in Riverdale, the Bronx is a large botanical garden above the
Hudson river.

In San Francisco there is a Japanese garden.

Boyce Thompson Arboretrum, in Superior, AZ (45 min E of PHX) is
interesting and unusual. Founded in the teens by Mr Thompson, a mining
magnate, as a private garden for his western residence -- so, many of
the plantings are nearing the century mark, including (ims) the largest
eucalyptus in the US. Cool place -- Google for details. Esp. nice in
spring (like now).

It's OK but very small, much smaller than the Brooklyn Botanic
Gardens, which are still smaller than the New York Botanic Gardens in
the Bronx, but provide you with plenty of room to walk around.
(Caveat: I haven't been to the Queens Botanic Gardens in years.)

I enjoyed the Arboretum in Seattle very much.

I like the botanical gardens in Hawaii: 2 on Kauai, one near Hilo on the Big
Island.

FWIW, what is the definition of a botanical garden? Some people are replying
with I would call a conservatory.

I call Juilliard a conservatory. :-)

How do you differentiate the two? I think a conservatory is all in
greenhouses. Am I right?
