"Thank you sir, may I have another "
Rhetorically he asked ...
18% tax !?? An 11% CONCESSION charge because I'm arriving within 12
hours of pick up ? They think I should EAT more at the concession stands
... so we should all hang out at the airport for 13 hours after arrival
to save 11% ? and .. they need to cover the cost of licensing the car
? Shouldn't $1859 every few weeks cover that ? Apparently they have to
get another $12.08 every 3 weeks. ... (100% = .065 *x) ... x = 154
times. ... $12.08 times 154 = a lot of recovery cost, huh ?

Um. By "CA" do you mean Canada or California?

Mustang convertible " or similiar".

San Francisco, California.
Look at any area, frequented by tourists, and you are likely to see similar
rates and surcharges.
Hunt
Does pay to shop around.

Still doing so thanks. I have used Budget there (SFO) for the past 2
years - always reserved a Mustang convertible - always got a Sebring -
so no more Budget for me ( Sebring tilt wheel is in my lap).
About the AIRPORT CONCESSION RECOVERY ON FLIGHT ARRIVALS WITHIN 12 HOURS
fee of 11.10 % ... ( which although I found a definition at Alamo (
below), I don't understand the concept/objective), I know not gonna
change but to get around it :
1. If I return it a day BEFORE my departure , I can save about $200 ????
What purpose does that serve ? How is that " better" for them ?
2. Budget website stated " at some airports the fee can be avoided by
NOT using the shuttle to our pick-up location". Huh ? So if I walk or
take a CAB from the gate to the pick-up area - no $200 fee ?? Again -
what's the idea behind this ??? I suspect that it's just that most
people don't pay attention and they make an extra $200 by adding a
complicated sounding line item to the bill.
3. I thought the fee went directly to the airport, but it looks like to
rental company to help them pay the airport for their space. ( and why
not for their other/downtown locations ?)
BTW , when I checked return rate I wasn't asked - "when is your flight
home?" but I will try it later - enter a different departure date and
see if it goes down by $200. If it does , I'll get a hotel for another
night or return it elsewhere ( if only an airport fee) and just take a
cab to airport. .
< from Alamo website >
At some locations, Alamo has elected to impose "recovery fees" to
recover or recoup all or a portion of its expenses related to a type of
overhead. At certain airport locations where Alamo is an on-airport
concessionaire, Alamo has elected to impose a charge, often referred to
as a Concession Recoupment Fee or Concession Recovery Fee, to recover
all or a portion of the concession fees which it is obligated to pay to
the airport. Further, many airports impose a fee on revenue from
off-airport rental car transactions (typically when the customer exits
the airport using the off-airport company's shuttle bus) at locations
where Alamo is an off-airport concessionaire; Alamo elects to impose a
charge to recover all or a portion of this fee from customers. This fee,
which varies by airport, will appear separately in the charges section
of the rental agreement as Airport Fee, or the like.
There is a downtown Hertz rental near Union Square. Probably other rental
companies downtown. And you can take BART to/from SF to the airport.
This is actually not bad compared to some other places. There was a
USA Today article on highest rental car taxes at airports and I think
Houston was the "winner" with 73% tax. Several others were between
30-40%, including the city I live in, where rental car taxes help pay
for our shiny new football stadium.
> An 11% CONCESSION charge
Usually you can avoid this one by picking up the car off site ... as
an example I think in Anchorage there's a 15% state tax, 10% city tax
and 8% airport tax (these may not be exact but pretty close) and you
can avoid the 8% tax by picking up the car by picking it up at a site
nearby but not *at* the airport ...
And so it goes ...

Doubtful. Tourism in my home town is up significantly after heavy taxes
were placed on rental cars. This is in part because the taxes help pay
for some attractions that tourists enjoy. The taxes on a rental car are
also usually in such small proportion to the overall cost of a vacation
that most people don't even bat an eye over them.
No, you just get pissed about them. Avis had a sign about the excess tax in
Houston to pay for a football stadium. Easy to rip off visitors. Since I
was there on business, the company was extorted.
Far better YOU pay that the tax for the stadium than millions of residents
who NEVER use the effing stadium.
And how many of us travelers ever used the effing stadium?
Seems like the Boston Globe read this thread:
http://www.boston.com/travel/articles/2007/06/10/so_you_think_youre_saving_on_your_vacation?mode=PF
Too fucking bad. I'd MUCH rather a bunch of strangers pay a bunch of
nuisance taxes than us homeowning residents.

Update: We're skipping SF.
Portland/Northern CA/Seattle loop instead.
17 days of WA RENTAL CAR ,
TAX = $ 27.57 USD
Maybe Mayor Newsom can get Barry Bonds to help pay for that stadium.
