Is driving across the Golden Gate Bridge in a motorhome
allowed? I am going on a trip through California in a smaller
motorhome and would like to drive across the bridge.
I remember that last time when I was travelling
in a 31' motorhome across the bridge there was some troubled
looks when I went through the toll gate (they did not even
want any money from me..smile). Someone started asked questions
but then allowed me to pass, so I never understood the problem.
But I noticed that there are many weight restrictions on the
streets of San Francisco, so maybe the 14.500lbs was a bit
overweight, or...?

Also I would be grateful for information about good campgrounds
in the Bay Area. Not to mention good places to park the RV
when walking around in town..

The problem is that for Golden Gate Bridge, tolls are collected for
south bound traffic at the south end -- when you arrived at the toll
station, you have already crossed the bridge and they cannot stop you
any longer ........

We drove across in a car in October and there were no tolls or questions
that day.

There is a good KOA campground 37 freeway miles north of SF at
Petaluma,60 acre rural setting. $26 US.

Yes, that was what I did, coming from the north..
From the troubled looks I knew that I had done something
wrong, and the officer started to ask about if it was
my own motorhome and was going to see my papers but
when he heard that I was a foreigner he had some discussion
with another person and just said 'you can go' so I
was quick to continue of course.. I got the impression
that I should not have been driving the motorhome
across the bridge. Thinking of it, yes it was kind
of windy that day.

Thanks to all folks who replied, I will drive across
the bridge during the next trip and hope for sunny weather..

Heavy trucks cross the GGB all the time. I seriously doubt that the
weight is a problem. But all American cities have weight restrictions
on many streets to protect the pavement.

As to asking for money, perhaps you were coming across in the morning
or evening of a weekday, when vehicles with three or more passengers
are considered to be carpools and do not have to pay a toll. If your RV
had more than two axles, the fare would have been greater, and perhaps
the toll-taker was a littel puzzled about what to do with a multi-axle
carpool.

Simply parking to walk around is not so easy. There is a downtown RV
park, but that would be for overnight stays. However, there are places
outside of downtown where you could park such a vehicle and take the
streetcar or light rail into the downtown. Email me for details.
-
The downtown RV park is pretty stark, being a whole block of asphalt
enclosed by a chain link fence. But it is certainly convenient. I
suggest you investigate the RV park in Pacifica. It is on a bluff
overlooking the ocean, and there is bus service into San Francisco.
Again, if you want details, email me.

There is no problem crossing the Golden Gate Bridge in a motorhome. Going north (out of
San Francisco) is free and going south is $3.00. Maybe a little more for an RV.

Please DO NOT drive a motorhome around SF. Parking is terrible and the hills will make your
life miserable. We who live in SF have to battle each other daily for parking and a motorhome
will add to the congestion.

Instead, why don't you consider staying somewhere north of San Francisco. I can't
recommend any RV parks but I'm sure that there are some. Then you can drive your RV to
the Larkspur Ferry Terminal (plenty of parking there) and take the Ferry into SF. On a clear
day it is the most beautijul ride in the world and the public transportation system is very good.
The Ferry takes you right downtown and you can get to all the sights easily from there.

Hope you enjoy your visit,

Bruce

Yeow, where are you gonna park that behemoth in the city?! You can no
doubt cross the GG bridge in it- unless the wind is blowing like it is
tonight and on a few other nights in the winter- then they may ban trucks
and rvs from travel on the span. Sometimes with storms in the area _very_
high winds aare clocked across the Gate.
I think your main problem is going to be parking. You can probably
park along some of the park roads in Golden Gate Park - as long as you
park far enough out towards the ocean, but other parts of the city are
going to be a problem. In the city, my Mazda 323 is just the right size to
keep me from hunting for way too long for a parking spot. And a lot of
the parking garages don't really accomodate very large vechicles either.
I recommend that you park that thing outside the city somewhere and take
transit in. However, there is an RV campground down by the Caltrain
staation at Townsend and Fourth, which seems to be the campsite of choice
for you while you are in the city- and just leave the hulk there while you
are visiting the city.
Don't even try to cruise Chinatown in an RV! RVs are great for
traveling across the great wide spaces but they don't work real well in
this town. But I hope you do come to SF and enjoy the city - it is a
beautiful place and it would be a shame to pass it by.
