We enjoy snorkeling, and plan to visit the keys in Jan or Feb,
with most of our 2 weeks in Key West. Any opinions as to whether
we rent a car in Miami and drive down stopping at a couple of
snorkel points on the way, or do we fly down to Key West and use
it as point for day trips to other keys north of it? Also would
appreciate opinions on places to stay and to eat--both good as
well as reasonably priced.

Rent a car! once you see the airport at Key West you will know why. It
is hard to park in Key West However, so you may want to turn the car in
once you get to Key West. Send me an e-mail and I'll give you a list of
favorite resturants later on.

It looks like you have the time. I would rent a car. The drive down
the coast and across the bridges is beautiful.

Call FL Keys Dive Center 800.433.8946 or Looe Key Dive Center 800.942.5397
for more info about diving in the area.

Of course don't miss John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

Also check out our directory of places to stay....

I visited the Keys in January, and in my opinion they are highly over-rated.

The drive down to Key West from Miami is basically a traffic queue with poor
services on the way. There is endless pollution from all these cars and trucks.

The beaches are all cheesy and are nothing compared to what you will find
elsewhere in the world, eg S. Europe, SE Asia. John Pennekamp park as I remember
was just a big car park invested with mosquittos and adjacant to a long, dirty
beach full of people. (It is quite nice under the water, though)

The bridges are unimaginatively designed and are an eyesore. Old, disused bridges
run parallel and also spoil the scenery. Key West has a nice old-town but other
than that could be anywhere in Florida. You can't watch the sunset properly
because party boats hover about in front of the pier obstructing the view.

The famous cats are smelly and scruffy.

All the keys are developed and there is little unspoilt landscape remaining.

But if you can get a cheap flight and accomodation then you'll find the cost of
living fairly low, and the climate is definately good.

what an unknowledgeable assesment of the keys - other than key west - from
beveridge.

don't even consider key west for snorkeling...pennekamp in key largo is
the best thing going...you have to decide how often you want to take that
tedious drive from miami from largo...consider spending a few days in the
key largo/islamorada area...in any event, you'll need a car.

I have been to Key West several times and I don't feel there

I've visited Key West and I don't feel there is any major need for
a car. Half the fun of being at KeyWest is exploring it by foot,
moped, or bike. Get a hotel near Duval an you're set.... just
typing this is making me homesick for KeyWest.

The Keys are truly beautiful. I live in Miami but drive to our condo in
the Keys every weekend. There is traffic but NO pollution and compared
to other traffic, ie. New York, Paris, etc. the Keys have not traffic
problems. As to the sunset you do not have to go to the crowdest
location in Key West to see the sun set! There are thousands of other
locations if you care to look. As to the bridges not being imaginative,
how "imaginative" can you make a bridge that is SEVEN miles long and that
takes you across a beautiful seascape?

I agree. Rent a car.
I would like to recommend a guy that does kayak trips. He's in the lower
keys (a few miles before KW)
If you're interested I'll give you directions.
Good luck!
Remember to stop at the no name pub!!!! Best pizza in the keys
BTW I don't live there, I wish I did though...

I think you need to broaden your horizons!

KeyWest can be covered in a half-day. After that you will find limited
services available, and, out of the town centre, very run down streets
as you would find in one of those horid W. Florida cities eg St Petersburg.

A car is not possible in Key West since there is very limited car parking.

But if you have a hotel out of the centre, you're going to need one anyway.
