The mummy candy is probably a slight variation on the popular skeleton
candies. If you read up on day of the Dead, you will learn more about
this custom.

The mummy candy is sold all year long and it has a much different appearance
than the candy skulls that are sold for Dia de los Muertos. The only worse
looking thing is the mummies in the mummy museum. At least they now have
clothes on. My Spanish teacher (from Mexico City) told me that 15 years ago
(or so) the mummies were displayed in all of their mummy nakedness and that
was even nastier to look at. I guess the anti-aging cream wears off after
300 years or so. I don't think that the mummies are doing too well because
I caught a definite whiff of decay when I last visited the museum, a couple
of years ago.
