Hello,

I am going to Costa Rica in May and have a question about canopy
tours. I have seen ads for many of them in the Monteverde area, does
anyone have any recommendations? The tours with the zip lines look like
a lot of fun. Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks,

Bruce

We did a zip line tour in Monteverde. It was one of the best things we
did. After the first 2 or 3 "zips" all fear disappears and you enjoy
soaring through tree tops. I think we went with Canopy Tours. It is
advertised to have the most zip lines. I can recommend that company. I
don't have any info about the others - I'm sure any would be fun.
PS Monteverde was my favorite spot in Costa Rica

I did the Sky Trek a few weeks ago.
It's 8 towers. The highest is 130meters over a canyon & 420 meters
long. We could see the lake and Arenal volcano from the platform. You
are strapped to a pulley that has a place for your hands on either side.
You are attached at the waist by a climbing belt and a secondary
attachment with a strap to the pulley. I understand on the canopy tour
(I think there are 2) you just hang hands free. The guide spent most of
his time hands free as opposed to others who were white knuckled. We
saw an Ocelot eating on the way down.

If you have any other Qs, I drove from San Jose to Monteverde and Arenal
and was also in Drake Bay.

There is 3 different canopy tours in Monteverde: We liked the Sky Trek
because it's better built, longer, more diversified, more fun.

-Sky Trek, 11 zips (2 kilometers or 1.3 mile of cables, 3 suspension
bridges, an 8 story observation tower, 2.5
kilometers of primary forest trail) $35 adults,
$28 students, 2.5 to 3 hours. Built by an engineer, constant change of
activity, gorgeous forest, nice views,
best value. Next to the Reserve of Santa Elena,
so you can combine both, in the same day.

Tours starts at 7h30 am, last one: 2h00 PM

-Monteverde Canopy Tour, more rustic construction. More adventurous (we
don't think it's very safe. My
girlfriend is an architect, and was scared when
she saw the anchoring system. she loved Sky Trek...). You have to brake
with a leather glove to control your
speed. Short trail, forest a bit damaged, nice
views, it's a series of platforms. 13 platforms, 14 cables, length of
cables: 1.5 kilometers or 1 mile, no bridge or
tower, shorter duration: 2 hours. Same price,
time: 8h AM, 2H PM. If you get afraid of heights, you can't stop, you
must do several cables before being able
to get off, contrary to Sky Trek, where you can
stop anytime, walk back on parallel trails, and get a refund.

-Original Canopy Tour, they where the first one to operate this tour.
Since they had good reviews in Guide
Books, they used to be very popular, and raised
their prices to $45. Much shorter then the other two, because the do not
own the land where they operate
(secondary forest, hotel property), they won't
invest in adding cables or building bridges or tower. 3 shorter cables
(only 600 feet), that you do back and
forth, 6 zips. duration 1.5 hours.

Have fun!

I went to Monteverde in April and tried the canopy tour. The zip
line was fantastic and well run. There were three options for
tours
1. A motorised tour in an open carriage rather like a fair
ground ride which gave a good view of the canopy but was rather
sedate.
2. Zip lines only which I tried and was great fun and
exhilarating but not the best way to see the canopy.
3. A combination of walkways through the canopy connected by zip
lines which offered a little of both.

Take your pick you will enjoy all of them.

They were all easily booked from hotels and arround the town.

While in Monteverde check out the Hummingbird Bird Gallery. See
Defining Moments under Costa Rica on www.amisto.com. The butterfly farm
tour is also an interesting excursion, also listed on www.amisto.com.
If you find a suitable and safe zipline tour let me know so we can add
it to our site. Allow a half day to drive up there from San Jose. Once
you turn off the "highway" it can be a slow going, even with a jeep.

I just got back from CR. Did the "original" canopy tour in Monteverde. There
was an 89 year old woman in our group traveling with her grand-daughter. Not
exactly your TYPICAL 89 year old, but she went on the tour and had a great
time.

They are all basically the same, you play Tarzan for a few hours, but
nothing beats a nice walk in one of the 2 reserves.
