hi, i'm interested in any opinions or information regarding safety
backpacking around mexico (I'm a 30 year old female from Australia)

i will be arriving in mexico city and travelling on my own, and want
to do it on the cheap, including local transport and cheap hotels etc
etc.

Could anyone give me any advice or help in regards to this: i have
done a lot of backpacking on my own in the past but never in this area
and i heard it can be quite bad for bandits and holdups and stuff.

Also, any advice on the best places to visit on my way overland to the
US. Anywhere i should definitely not miss, or anywhere i should
avoid???

look forward to getting some advice :-)
thanks.

Hi---

1. Learn at least some Spanish if you do not already know it.

2. Do not let your personal appearance and cleanliness deteriorate. (Often
easier said than done when backpacking, but very important to Latin Americans.)

3. If you are staying in cheap hotels, do not accept a hotel that is so cheap
it does not have a lock on the door or has windows that could easily be climbed
into. If a place does not "feel" safe, find another hotel.

4. Always try to arrive at your destination in daylight.

5. Rely on local advice. If locals suggest a particular destination, part of
town, or area is unsafe for a single woman, take their advice. In general,
everyone wants you to have a positive experience in their country, so seek out
advice from the locals and follow it.

6. Footprint Press "Guide to Mexico and Central America" is *the best* guide.

7. Good luck, be careful, and have a wonderful time!

Why should she be kidding ? Here in Australia, we may be backward, we do
have 30 year old females.

I don't know that I've ever met the Mexican male that a lady from Oz
couldn't handle.Any Aussie lass that can hold her own at home
shouldn't have any trouble fending off the latin men.Go,hook up with a
fellow traveler (just to watch yer back ),and have a great
trip.........Howard

Where have you've been the last 50 years ? Woman don't need to sit at the
fire place and wait till their life is over. There has been an emancipation
going on. It's time you realise that woman do have a life. I've been to
Mexico a month ago (and no, I didn't take Crocodile Dundee, bad joke anyway
!!) with another female backpacker and we did had a wonderful time, and so
did the other female backpackers we've met. We found Mexican men (and woman)
very helpful and friendly (even in Mexico D.F., which is supposed to be
dangerous). You'll get the treatment you deserve, just behave yourself as a
guest in their country.

thanks everyone for the advice....the positive stuff was very
gratefully recieved, and the negative stuff made me smile...
I've done a lot of backpacking in the past, worldwide, so i know how
to handle myself for the most part, and i am taking spanish classes
right up until i go (november). I guess i was just looking for some
reassurance that doing it alone is no big deal....*smiles*

and thanks for the advice of where to go...have been reading my lonely
planet and rough guides, but its all so much to take in....hell i wish
i had a year...well i do but i don;t have a years worth of money :-)

and all you people who said i shouldn't...well you have just made me
more determined, so i thank you as well for the confidence boost!!
