Our family is off to Puerto Vallarta in January. We are somewhat
overwhelmed with the lists of restaurants we have seen, all of which
appear to be excellent. We would like recommendations. We aren't up to
handling a lot of gourmet food and we aren't really interested in ethnic
restaurants aside from Mexican. (eg. Why have Italian food in Puerto
Vallarta when it's available at home?)

Any suggestions for some good basic/Mexican restarants in PV?

Any suggestions for web sights with info/coupons on restaurants?

Thanks in advance.

Season's Greetings,

Bill

> BillYou are correct, there are so many good restaurants in PV that
it is difficult too choose. One moderately priced with a good mexican
menu is Los Arbolitos . We walked about 8 blocks from the market
at the bridges. I reccomend you take a taxi it will only cost
a few pesos and you will not have any trouble finding it.
Another must for casual breakfast or lunch ist the Pancake House
at 289 Badillo.
We also enjoyed Daquiri Dicks at playa Los Meurtos at Olas Atlas

Hi, Bill......I've just returned from Puerto Vallarta. The restaurants
that Murray reccommended are all very good. Additionally, you might want
to try El Puente del Fuente which is right at the river, across from the
flea market and park. Good, inexpensive place for lunch. Also, great
Margarita's! Also, take a walk on the beach at Playa de los Muertos where
there are several restaurants opening right on to the beach. I can't
remember the name of the place now, but it is about halfway down the
beach, and by far has the largest number of tables and chairs directly on
the beach. This place is very good. Great views at lunch. Very romantic
at dinner. Moderately priced. Hope this helps. Enjoy.

Last time in PV was five years ago but (if it's still there) the Feliz Ostione
restaurant on Calle Libertad serves up some killer seafood a la parilla.

We too have just returned from P.V. I'll mention our favorites to you in
spite of their not being strictly Mexican...they were just that good, and
deserve to be mentioned! Adobe Cafe, Maximillian's, Cafe Frankfurt,
Abadia Basso, Le Bistro, El Set (great ocean view), Cafe de Artistes, Los
Pibes, and if you are a sports fan and have to see that playoff game, "El
Torito" has numerous TV's with satellite hook-ups...definitely the sports
bar of choice! We also took the P.V. "house tour" (meets in the main
Plaza on Fri. and Sat. I think...11 A.M.)...this is a great chance to see
some of the really lovely homes and benefit worthwile charity.

Bill, I'm with Murray on Los Arbolitos. It's a little off the main tourist
track (a plus in my book) It's at Lazaro Cardenas and Camino de La Ribera,
#184. Good for lunch or dinner. Very Mexican. Very good. Very reasonable.

Le Bistro is upscale, Mexican/International. Great food and ambiance. On Isla
Rio Cuale. Live soft music to dine by.

Restaurant Chez Elena has been highly recommended to me. I'll try it when I'm
in P.V. this January. It's in the patio at Hotel Los Cuatro Vientos which is
advertised..."relaxed atmosphere and breezy Mexican flavor." Up in Gringo
Gultch at Matamoros 520.

Hotel Roger, on Basillio Badillo 237 at Vallarta has excellent breakfasts in
it's restaurant.

A guide book I highly recommend is Puerto Vallarta Handbook (1995) by Bruce
Whipperman. I've spent a few weeks in the area for the last few Januarys.
Using my personal experience as a guideline, I think Whipperman's comments
are right on.

Bill:

My wife and I had a nice dinner at Las Palomas, on the Malecon. We
sat by the open window facing the sea and watched an incredible
tropical lightning and torrential rainstorm no more than 10 feet away
while sipping margaritas (or maybe it was a Pacifico, I can't
remember). Also, a highlight of any trip to PV is to rent a jeep and
cruise north to the little coastal villages and almost deserted
beaches. Try Sayulita and Playa San Francisco.
