That brings back some memories - we stayed in a village on the NE coast
called Fanari IIRC - you had to get there by a small boat which came
out to met the ferry from Rhodes - pretty perilous, but old ladies and
goats had no problem.

Anyway, we stayed in the usual "rooms" run by an old lady who had run a
hot dog stall in Philadelphia for 12 years, not learned a word of
English, and came home with enough cash to buy a "hotel" and some land.

However - I'm a bit surprised you didn't visit the village of Olimbos,
with its windmills?
