We will be in Paris through March 28th and all the travel books tell me
that Monet's house in Giverny is closed until April, but that the gardens
are open.
Has anyone been there at this time of year--is it worth making the trip (I've
always wanted to go there, so it wouldn't take much to impress me). Thanks!

If the house IS open, by all means go through it. The issue is really not
whether you like Japanese prints(that's another whole discussion) but
rather that what you will see is the room the way Monet liked it. The
pictures were his choice, and it is very moving to see the actual
environment in which he lived at one time. Also, if you care enough about
Impressionism to want to visit one of the major artists, you can't
dismiss the impact of Japanese wood block prints on his work.

I'm suspicious about the gardens being open. I've never known them to open earlier
in the season than the house. So please check carefully before you make the trip
all the way out there, only to be disappointed.

If they are open theough, by all means go. I've been there the first week of April,
when things are just blooming, and I've been there at the end of October when
everything is dying off, and it's still spectacular. The best time to go, I think,
is June, when the roses are at their best, but I don't think you'll be disappointed
by what you see.

While in Giverny, allow some time for the Museum of American Impressionism.

As for Monet's house, I'd skip it even if it is open. Unless you love Japanese
prints. Which I don't. To me, it's the gardens to go there for, not the house.

Enjoy!

I visited Giverny in May two years ago on my way from Paris to Normandy. Giverny turned out to be the highlight of my trip. The ga=
rdens are beautiful and well worth the excursion *at that time of year*. Don't know about March, however, sorry.

I have been to Giverny three times (October, June and May) -- it is
definitely worth the trip no matter what time of year...I will return
there (again with another friend) this August.

If you want info on what to see and how long to spend there, just e-mail
me back at Ginny...@aol.com

It's one of the most special places in France
